This is a permanent, full-time position with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services, Fisheries and Ecological Services, National Black-Footed Ferret Conservation Center in Carr, Colorado.
The incumbent of this position assists in coordinating and implementing activities associated with recovery of the endangered Black-footed Ferret. Incumbent is primarily responsible for assisting the On-Site Manager of the Services' National Black-footed Ferret Conservation Center (FCC), with daily management of the FCC captive Black-footed ferret population and assisting with oversight of partner Black-footed Ferret Species Survival Plan (SSP) captive breeding facilities to ensure the propagation of Black-footed Ferrets for genetic maintenance of the species and for reintroduction purposes. Duties also include assisting with FCC staff with daily animal care and husbandry work of the endangered Black-footed ferret in addition to prairie dogs and hamsters as associated with management and operation of the FCC.
This position will be filled at the GS-11 grade level.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

In addition to meeting the "Specialized Experience" requirements listed below, applicants must meet the education requirements as described under "Basic Requirements".
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
GS-11: One year of progressively responsible experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-09 grade level is qualifying for GS-11) that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: recognizing various diseases and health conditions of Black-footed ferrets and prairie dogs; surveying and handling Black-footed ferrets in both captive and wild environments; experience with animal husbandry, reproductive assessment and captive breeding of endangered Black-footed ferrets.
SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
GS-11: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education from an accredited college or university leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree directly related to the position being filled.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying at the GS-11 grade levels, which when combined meets 100% of the qualification requirements.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience regardless of whether compensation was received or whether the experience was gained as a part-time or full-time occupation. Full-time work is generally considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

A.Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a biological science that included:-At least 9 semester hours in such wildlife subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, or research courses in the field of wildlife biology; AND-At least 12 semester hours in zoology in such subjects as general zoology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, entomology, or research courses in such subjects (excess courses in wildlife biology may be used to meet the zoology requirements where appropriate.); AND-At least 9 semester hours in botany or the related plant sciences.

B.Combination of education and experience-equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), with at least 9 semester hours in wildlife subjects, 12 semester hours in zoology, and 9 semester hours in botany or related plant science as described, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Incumbent assists in the development, review and implementation of Black-footed ferret husbandry protocols associated with FCC operations and other Black-footed ferrets housed at managed SSP facilities in the United States and Canada. Provides assistance and/or advice to all Species Survival Plan facilities through participation on monthly conference calls and/or travel to partner facilities. Provides care for Black-footed ferrets while maintaining laboratory, indoor facilities, and outdoor facilities in a clean, safe condition. Duties include cage cleaning, feeding and watering animals, as well as providing treatment for minor illnesses or diseases. Enters data on animals' condition and health and maintains records of daily routines. Assists with assessment of male and female Black-footed ferret reproductive status and provides special animal care during breeding, whelping, and weaning seasons. Prepares and ships dead Black-footed ferrets to pathologists for identification of cause of death. Works closely with On-site Manager in developing and implementing annual Black-footed ferrett breeding recommendations based on maintenance of genetic diversity of the SSP population. Attends quarterly meetings of the Local Government Front Range Prairie Dog group and assists On-site Manager with coordination of prairie dog deliveries, processing, shipment to Black-footed ferret SSP facilities, data entry and year end report writing and presentation. Assists FCC staff in care of prairie dog quarantine facilities and processing of prairie dogs and oversees shipment of dead prairie dogs to pathologists for identification of cause of death. Serves as a resource person for Black-footed ferret, prairie dog and hamster animal care and responds to emergency calls. Responsible for responding to weather emergencies related to the need to provide care for a captive animals housed at FCC. Assists the on-site manager with coordination of annual transfers of Black-footed ferrets among SSP facilities, to preconditioning facilities and to reintroduction sites following established SSP transportation protocols. Assists field personnel at Black-footed ferret reintroduction sites with monitoring health of free-ranging ferrets through collection of biomedical information, vaccination and collection of ectoparasites. Activities may include collecting basic data through field investigations, searching published technical sources for information, and review of project-related documents (e.g., Black-footed ferret specimen requests, research proposals, endangered species permit reports, etc.). Uses approved Black-footed ferret trapping and handling techniques and anesthesia procedures to identify free-ranging Black-footed ferrets with passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags. Irregular work hours are expected to meet the needs of the captive population of endangered Black-footed ferrets and other needs of the recovery program.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:Frequent travel is required; at times will require exceeding normal working hours particularly during travel status. Normal activities such as sitting, standing, walking in an office or meeting environment, or travel by motor vehicle or commercial aircraft. Employee may also be required to lift and carry heavy equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Field investigations may involve travel throughout the United State, Mexico and Canada and travel in off-road vehicles or walking long distances during inclement weather or over wet, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces may be expected. The work requires both office and outdoor work. Temperature and weather extremes may be encountered in the performance of the outdoor work. Travel with overnight lodging at commercial facilities as well as attending meetings in other agency offices or locations is required. Subject to hazards of working with animals, including diseases, bites, or other physical injuries.
