This position is located in the Division of Resources Management of Death Valley National Park (DVNP), duty stationed at Scotty's Castle. It may be filled at the GS-05 or the GS-07 level. If selected at the GS-05 level, this position has promotion potential to the GS-07 level and is contingent upon meeting all legal and regulatory requirements and recommendations by supervisor. More than one position may be filled should the need arise. Duties for this job include collection management activities revolving around care for one of the largest furnished historic house museums within the Pacific West Region of the National Park Service.See 'Major Duties' section for details about this position. DVNP is a 3.4-million acre park located in the northern Mojave Desert. Temperatures in Death Valley are spring-like from late September to March/April and hot (120+) and dry in summer; temperatures at Scotty's Castle are approximately 10-15 degrees cooler. Employee shuttle from Cow Creek to the duty station is available for a monthly fee.School for K-4 is located in the Cow Creek Housing area and K-12 is located in Shoshone, California (60 miles and bus available). Grocery shopping and medical services are located in Pahrump, NV (62 miles), major shopping and complete medical services are located in Las Vegas, NV (125 miles), Ridgecrest, CA (128 miles), or Bishop, CA (154 miles). Recreation includes swimming, golf, tennis, volleyball, county library, camping, hiking, horseback riding, and 4-wheel drive and/or mountain biking over designated backcountry roads. Satellite television and radio is available through employee purchase; there is a NPR radio station available locally. All park employees are encouraged to participate in structural fire and emergency medical (EMS) activities. There may be government housing available on a bid system at Cow Creek.Non-government housing is available in Amargosa Valley, Beatty and Pahrump, NV. DVDEU08-21 Museum Technician QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Specialized Experience:General experience is not considered qualifying experience for either the GS-05 or the GS-07.You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA?s) to perform successfully the duties of the position.For the GS-05 Grade, this experience must be at the GS-04 level; for the GS-07 grade, it must be at the GS-05 level. Specialized Experience is experience related to the operation or management of a museum or similar collection of valuable objects.Examples of qualifying specialized experience include collections management, registration, cataloging, research, preservation, restoration, or conservation of collections of museum material, or other experience related to the position to be filled.Most positions require a particular subject-matter specialization, e.g., aeronautics, anthropology, art, geology, history, natural science, technology, biology, or zoology. For GS-5:To qualify based on education at the GS-05 level, the incumbent must have successfully completed 4 years above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or 24 semester hours of course work in a related field.(See Education and Training below.)Related field of study include art, history, museum studies, scientific subjects, or other courses related to the position to be filled. Note:This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business or technical school. For GS-7:1 full academic year of related graduate level education or superior academic achievement. Note:One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. Superior Academic Achievement is based on: (1) Class standing: Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision based on completed courses; (2) Grade-point average (G.P.A.): Applicants must have a G.P.A of: (a) 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ('B' or better) as recorded on their official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum or (b) 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ('B+' or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; OR (3) Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society: Applicants can be considered eligible based on membership in one of the national scholastic honor societies listed in the Association of College Honor Societies: Booklet of Information (1992-95) and/or Baird's Manual of American College Fraternities (1991). You must be a U.S. citizen to qualify for this position. You will need to successfully complete a background security investigation before you can be appointed into this position. DVDEU08-21 Museum Technician Additional Duty Location Info:1 vacancy - Inyo County, Death Valley, CA MAJOR DUTIES: BackToTop(); This job is located at Scotty's Castle.The varied museum collection at Scotty?s Castle in northern Death Valley National Park ranges from decorative arts such as European antiques and custom-designed 1920s furnishings to ranching / western gear, basketry, architectural samples, and varied archives.Duties for this job include varied collection management activities revolving around care for one of the largest furnished historic house museums within the Pacific West Region of the National Park Service.The Museum Technician will also work with museum collections exhibited and stored in other historic structures located at this historic district. Major duties include but are not limited to the following:Museum Technician monitors museum exhibit and storage environments and objects, and maintains museum records including computerized accession and cataloging records.Major duties also include upgrade and organization of museum storage spaces and materials, and tracking and ordering appropriate museum supplies.Work with exhibits includes participating with implementation of the historic furnishings report, and producing or facilitating small temporary exhibits.Museum Technician facilitates research requests and other appropriate uses of the collection, and performs database or other archival searches.Museum Technician occasionally performs specialized historic housekeeping, preservation maintenance, and preventive conservation of museum objects whose treatment does not require a high degree of specialization, and occasionally leads interns or temporary employees in these activities.Museum Technician facilitates conservation surveys and conservation treatment.Duties include occasional cataloging or documentation of museum objects and other components of the historic site, and accessioning of objects or archives.Museum Technician completes the Annual Inventory of Museum Property and participates in monitoring status of the museum fire/ security detection system.Duties also occasionally include overseeing work of interns, volunteers, or others in functions such as cleaning or other preventive maintenance, cataloging or other documentation, and monitoring.Museum Technician works with Museum Curator in implementation of museum program goals, and provides input and assistance with varied collection management projects.
