The Senior Technology Reporter will work with the Ars Technica team to produce daily content, including informed news and analysis, in the consumer technology field. The candidate should be comfortable with writing for a technically sophisticated audience, while also being able to make complex topics accessible. We’re looking for skilled communicator who is also a subject matter expert in one or more of the following areas:
Desktop and mobile operating systems, including Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android
Desktops and laptops
Mobile phones and related devices
CPU & GPU architecture
Storage, including NAS, hard drives, and solid-state drives
Self-hosting and homelab-type services, including and especially solutions based around open-source software
In addition to daily news coverage, the position will also write occasional long-form pieces on matters of expertise, including product reviews. This is a Guild-represented position with benefits.
Responsibilities:
Write regularly on consumer technology news and analysis, including CPUs, GPUs, PCs, laptops, phones, tablets, smartwatches, IoT devices, operating systems, and related hardware/software ecosystems
Conduct hands-on testing for reviews and analysis, including device setup, photography/screenshots, benchmarking, and methodology documentation
Develop primary coverage areas while also writing occasional ad hoc stories as assigned
Write occasional feature-length articles on in-depth topics as pitched or assigned
Work with editors and staff to generate story ideas, plan product coverage, maintain event awareness, and help guide Ars technology coverage
Generate headlines in accordance with editorial best practices and team processes
Integrate editor feedback on writing, reporting, quality, and coverage priorities
Participate actively in team collaboration and project management tools and processes
Engage in occasional editing, mentoring, travel, and other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
5+ years of demonstrated writing and research expertise in relevant subject matter
Deep working knowledge of the consumer technology landscape, including operating systems, PCs, mobile and desktop hardware, and relevant historical context
Demonstrated ability to own a beat, set and meet coverage priorities, and identify stories before they become obvious
Strong news judgment, critical thinking, attention to detail, and organizational skills
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Collaborative team player and self-starting individual contributor, with ability to mentor less experienced writers where appropriate
Strong time management, timeliness, and dependability across multiple projects and competing assignments in a fast-paced environment
Willingness to work some early mornings, nights, weekends, holidays, and travel as projects may require

The expected base salary range for this position is from $86,000.00 - $115,000.00. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including but not limited to relevant skills, training, experience, and education.
