Job Summary
The Patient Service Representative (PSR) provides front-desk, registration, scheduling, and customer service support in a hospital or clinic setting. The PSR is often the first point of contact for patients, families, visitors, and healthcare providers.
This role requires strong communication skills, professionalism, attention to detail, and the ability to work in a fast-paced healthcare environment while protecting patient privacy and following facility policies.
Key Responsibilities
- Greet patients, families, and visitors professionally and respectfully.
- Check patients in and out for appointments, procedures, or hospital services.
- Verify patient demographics, insurance information, and contact details.
- Schedule, reschedule, and confirm patient appointments.
- Answer phone calls and direct calls to the appropriate department or staff member.
- Collect required forms, consents, and patient documents.
- Update patient records in the electronic medical record system.
- Assist with referrals, authorizations, and basic insurance verification as needed.
- Communicate with nurses, providers, and clinical staff regarding patient flow.
- Maintain confidentiality and follow HIPAA requirements.
- Provide clear instructions to patients and families regarding appointments, paperwork, and next steps.
- Handle patient questions and concerns with professionalism and empathy.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming front-desk area.
- Follow hospital, clinic, safety, and customer service policies.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Previous customer service, front desk, call center, or healthcare office experience preferred.
- Hospital, clinic, patient registration, or medical office experience preferred.
- Basic computer and data entry skills required.
- Ability to use electronic medical record systems and scheduling software.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to pass background check, health screening, and facility onboarding requirements.
Preferred Experience
- Patient registration or patient access experience.
- Experience verifying insurance and updating patient demographics.
- Experience with EPIC, Cerner, or another electronic medical record system.
- Experience working in a hospital, clinic, or healthcare environment.
- Bilingual skills are a plus, depending on facility needs.

License / Certification Requirement
A clinical license is usually not required for a PSR position because it is generally an administrative healthcare support role.
However, the hospital or clinic may require specific onboarding items such as a background check, drug screening, immunization records, TB test, flu shot, COVID-19 requirements, or other facility credentialing documents.
Work Environment
The PSR works in a hospital, clinic, specialty office, or patient access department. The role may involve sitting at a front desk, answering phones, using a computer, assisting patients in person, and coordinating with clinical and administrative staff.
