Salary:
The successful candidate’s starting pay will fall within the pay ranges listed below. Base salary is localized according to an employee’s work location. Ranges are market-dependent and may be modified in the future.
For candidates living in Boston, MA, Denver, CO, New York, NY, Los Angeles, CA, Sacramento, CA, San Diego, CA, and Washington, DC, the pay range is $69,300 - $80,550.
For candidates living in the United States, besides Boston, MA, Denver, CO, New York, NY, Los Angeles, CA, Sacramento, CA, San Diego, CA, and Washington, DC, the pay range is $58,700 - $68,250.
Position Summary:
PLEASE NOTE: This is a US-based role that requires the employee to reside within the 48 contiguous states.
This is a term-limited position for 12 months following hire date with the potential to extend provided funding is available.
The Specialist, Infectious Diseases provides a full range of support to the Infectious Diseases program within the Association focusing on vaccine preventable diseases. The Specialist works on behalf of and in collaboration with APHL members, staff, and partner organizations to improve and assure quality laboratory practices for infectious diseases. They provide scientific and administrative support to execute activities associated with the association’s vaccine preventable disease activities including coordination and program development for meetings and training events, monitoring contract deliverables, and compiling data on vaccine preventable disease testing. This position reports to the Program Manager, Infectious Disease Programs, under the overall supervision of the Senior Director of Infectious Diseases.
The Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) works to strengthen laboratory systems serving the public’s health in the U.S. and globally. APHL’s member laboratories protect the public’s health by monitoring and detecting infectious and foodborne diseases, environmental contaminants, terrorist agents, genetic disorders in newborns and other diverse health threats.
Duties & Responsibilities:
As part of the Infectious Diseases Team at APHL, the Specialist:
- Provides administrative and scientific support for APHL’s Infectious Disease efforts, including but not limited to the activities that support public health laboratories vaccine preventable disease testing capability and capacity
- Facilitates activities associated with convening national conferences, training courses, meetings or seminars including workgroup facilitation, developing promotional materials, coordinating travel logistics, facilitating onsite logistics, procuring and shipping supplies, providing onsite support and summarizing evaluation data.
- Prepares documents, reports, articles, blogs, presentations and correspondence for APHL on ID Program related activities and policies including compiling edits from multiple members into technical and non-technical documents.
- Develops and disseminates information through updates on program website, weekly E-Update and newsletter, Lab Matters, and other communication avenues.
- In collaboration with ID programmatic staff, maintains websites to include the most recent and relevant information.
- Develops and assists in formatting electronic surveys, collecting and validating survey data, and generating relevant reports regarding infectious disease issues.
- Development and monitoring of contracts including recording and monitoring contract deliverables and processing invoices for payment.
- Ensures procurement of laboratory supplies on behalf of members. Ensures that proper payment is made, product is delivered, and orders are tracked appropriately.
- Organizes and relevant files to complete work in an organized fashion. Uses APHL systems (i.e. SharePoint, Teams, etc.) to store files in an accessible location.
- Responds to requests for materials and information about program activities in writing, by phone and by email. Provides members and partners with appropriate information regarding program activities.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Flexibility to travel (estimated 1-3 domestic trips per year) is required.
Employment Standards - Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree (BA/BS) in public health, public administration, life science, or related field or equivalent experience and three years of related work experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge -
- Understands fundamental concepts of the public health role in the detection and control of infectious diseases.
- Knowledge of membership-based organizations, federal agencies, or state and local health departments.
- Knowledge of diagnostic or surveillance testing practices helpful.
Skills -
- Project and time management skills required with ability to track and maintain progress toward project deadlines and objectives.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills with correct English usage, including spelling, grammar, and word meaning required.
- Excellent interpersonal and customer relations skills.
- Computer literacy, successful experience in word processing, data analysis presentation preparation, use of e-mail and attention to detail.

APHL Weeks:
APHL Week is a Conference/Convention that is held at the APHL Home Office (Bethesda, MD). This event is mandatory for all employees to attend. Travel and lodging will be reimbursed by APHL.
Please Note: Reimbursement for travel and lodging may not be possible for employees that are local to the APHL Home Office.
