Job Summary:

Working with the head of school and department head for our Middle School, the ideal humanities teacher for MS will bring their constructivist teaching and deep content knowledge, teaming with other motivated colleagues to create a dynamic curriculum on world topics, guiding the academic and social-emotional growth of our children in a collegial setting.

For over sixty years, Selwyn School has been an educational beacon in north Texas. Located in Argyle, TX, Selwyn continues to prosper and grow. The environment here is student-focused. We develop students that are capable, empathetic, problem-solving, creative, capable of critical thought and effective communication and able to find and pursue their own paths as global citizens. Your contributions will be instrumental to continuing this legacy.

General Education and Experience:

The ideal candidate will:

Hold a bachelor’s degree or the equivalent in humanities, history, elementary education or a related field from an accredited four-year college or university. Advanced degree(s) are a plus.
Have a passion for teaching MS students, with at least 3 years of middle or secondary school classroom experience, ideally in an independent school.
Be capable of designing and teaching a constructivist curriculum for MS (grades 5-8) in the areas of humanities and history. These plans need to be integrated with technology and include a mix of independent content and integration across the broader MS curriculum outside of humantieis and history.
Demonstrate mastery in the areas of study for this position and teach within and across academic disciplines.
Have the ability to tailor an innovative, engaging educational approach to the particular needs of a class or student, delivering an education that effectively motivates every student to their potential and reflects our school’s mission and pedagogy.
When needed, help develop a class / program budget and manage expenses within this budget.
On and off campus, represent Selwyn School in a way that positively builds our brand image and motivates people to learn more about the school.
Help develop and execute school events and programs as needed.
Comply with all applicable local, state and federal rules and regulations regarding teaching lower school children.
Welcome constructive performance reviews, working to implement ideas for improvement on an ongoing basis.
Have unimpeachable ethics, honesty, respect for all and a deep desire to work on behalf of students and the people who serve them.
Fulfill other duties and responsibilities as required by school leadership.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Leveraging a modern understanding of constructiviest education and subject expertise, develop and teach a curriculum of history and humanities students. Collaborate with colleagues, department heads and the head of school to ensure your work is in support of school goals and pedagogical priorities.
Maintain and teach expertly your course of study with the highest standards for each student. Create hands-on, project-based learning experiences.
Partner with other colleagues and work effectively with department heads, the head of school and school leadership.
Serve as a leader and role model by example, exhibiting the character, understanding, demeanor, resilience and leadership expected of all professionals at our school. Support the well being of all students.
Learn our school mission and reflect it in all that you do. Ensure that lesson plans and teaching extend all critical elements of our “portrait of a graduate:” academic achievement, problem solving, community, compassion, global citizenship, leadership skills, empathy, resilience.
Effectively, frequently communicate with students, families and school administration and adapt as needed to meet the needs of our students. Engage parents regularly to help improve student development. Post pictures and synopses of student achievements on active school social media platforms, newsletters. Evaluating student performance, social development, behavior, health and intellectual growth, reporting on these periodically and as scheduled by your department head through school-defined systems and processes. Providing tutoring when required to help students achieve their goals.
Be a positive, active participant beyond the classroom, working with students, colleagues, leadership, parents and alumni on projects and events that promote the well-being of the school. Attending all scheduled meetings and events, including but not limited to department meetings, faculty meetings, all-school and family or community events and others as determined by the head of school and your department head. Helping chaperone selected MS/US off-campus trips, including week-long “Perspectives” trips which may be out of state.
Work on an Apple-centric IT platform and learn various online applications and systems. Integrate appropriate technology to enhance learning.
Comply with all staff, governmental and school requirements, including the Faculty and Staff Handbook. Represent Selwyn School well, on and off campus, including on all personal or professional social media, exhibiting professionalism, ethical behavior and respect. Maintain all records as required by the school and governmental licensing bureaus. Be on campus on the schedule required by the Head.
Proactively engage in self-development each year to improve effectiveness, working with department head to schedule teacher development. Model flexibility in implementing best learning practices.
Other duties as assigned.

Other Qualifications:

All prospective employees must be able to clear a background check and other employee screening as required. A USA-valid and current drivers license and record in good standing is required.
