Full Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) is responsible for providing advanced life support (ALS) and medical care in prehospital and interfacility settings. This position operates within established treatment protocols, ensuring high-quality emergency medical care and transport.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

This job description outlines the primary duties and requirements of the position but is not all-inclusive. The incumbent may be expected to perform additional job-related duties as necessary.

Patient Assessment & Emergency Care:
Evaluate the nature and severity of illness or injury to determine appropriate treatment and prioritize medical procedures.
Administer advanced airway management, IV therapy, and medication administration as permitted under AEMT protocols.
Restore and stabilize heart rhythms in non-responsive patients using defibrillation, pacing, or other approved interventions.
Provide CPR, advanced oxygen therapy, hemorrhage control, and shock management as needed.
Monitor and reassess patients throughout transport, adjusting care accordingly.
Documentation & Communication:
Accurately document patient assessments, treatments, vital signs, and scene observations in accordance with state and agency reporting requirements.
Provide patient care information to physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals via radio, electronic systems, or direct communication.
Maintain clear and professional communication with dispatch, hospital staff, and other first responders.
Operations & Equipment Maintenance:
Operate emergency vehicles safely and efficiently, ensuring compliance with all laws and agency policies.
Maintain the readiness of ambulances, medical equipment, and supplies, ensuring proper stocking and functionality.
Assist in cleaning, disinfecting, and decontaminating equipment and vehicles after patient transport.
Participate in quality improvement initiatives and training sessions to enhance skills and maintain compliance with medical protocols.
Professionalism & Teamwork:
Demonstrate courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with the public, patients, and team members.
Work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds in high-stress situations.
Adhere to HIPAA and patient confidentiality regulations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education & Experience:

High School Diploma or GED.
One (1) year of experience as an EMT; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Completion of an accredited AEMT program.

Required Knowledge & Skills:

Knowledge of:

Advanced prehospital care techniques, including IV therapy, medication administration, airway management, and trauma interventions.
Medical emergency symptoms and appropriate responses for various conditions.
EMS protocols, state regulations, and legal guidelines governing prehospital care.
Safe operation and maintenance of emergency vehicles and medical equipment.
Incident Command System (ICS) and mass casualty response protocols.
Computer applications related to EMS reporting and documentation.

Skill in:

Performing comprehensive patient assessments and advanced medical interventions.
Accurately documenting patient conditions, treatments, and observations.
Operating emergency vehicles in response to emergencies and non-emergencies.
Effectively communicating with patients, families, and healthcare professionals.
Using initiative and independent judgment within established treatment protocols.
Maintaining professional composure in high-pressure environments.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS:

All required certifications must be maintained in active status without suspension or revocation.

Valid Driver’s License (must meet agency requirements).
South Carolina AEMT Certification (or equivalent recognized certification).
BLS (Basic Life Support) Certification.
ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) and PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) preferred.

Ability to function in high-stress situations and respond effectively to critical incidents and mass casualty events.
