Position Overview

The Patient Advocate serves as a vital connection between KANA patients and healthcare services in Anchorage. This role helps patients navigate healthcare systems, access resources, coordinate services, and overcome barriers to care. The Patient Advocate works closely with patients, families, escorts, providers, and healthcare organizations to ensure patients receive the support they need before, during, and after medical visits.

This position is based in Anchorage and focuses on creating a positive patient experience while advocating for the health and social needs of KANA beneficiaries.

Key Responsibilities

Serve as a resource and advocate for patients receiving healthcare services in Anchorage
Assist patients, family members, and escorts with navigating healthcare systems, appointments, travel, and lodging needs
Coordinate transportation and housing arrangements for eligible patients as needed
Provide safe transportation between approved locations including airports, hotels, hospitals, and healthcare facilities
Guide patients through the healthcare process and help ensure they arrive prepared for appointments
Facilitate communication between patients, families, providers, and healthcare staff
Visit hospitalized KANA patients and serve as a liaison between patients and KANA
Identify and help resolve barriers affecting patient access, care coordination, or customer service
Maintain accurate documentation, records, and reports related to patient interactions and services provided
Participate in patient experience initiatives, committees, and process improvement activities
Respond to after-hours patient needs in accordance with the established on-call schedule

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required
Three years of related experience in healthcare, social services, patient advocacy, customer service, or a related field; equivalent combinations of education and experience considered
Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or a related field preferred
Knowledge of healthcare systems and community resources available to support patient health and social needs
Strong interpersonal, communication, advocacy, and problem-solving skills
Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment in sensitive situations
Demonstrated commitment to providing compassionate, patient-centered service
Experience working with diverse populations and vulnerable individuals preferred
Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record required

Work Schedule

KANA’s standard work schedule is 37.5 working hours per week, consisting of 7.5 paid working hours per day plus a one-hour unpaid lunch break (8.5 hours on site per day).
