Full Job Description

Job Summary
As a Mortgage Loan Underwriter, you will be responsible for evaluating and underwriting mortgage loan applications in accordance with the bank’s guidelines, investor requirements, and regulatory standards. You will work closely with loan officers, processors, and customers to ensure timely, accurate, and customer-centered lending decisions.

This is an in-person position located in Manhattan, Kansas, reflecting our belief in personal service and strong community connections.

Key Responsibilities

Loan Evaluation: Review and analyze mortgage loan applications, credit reports, income documentation, appraisals, and other supporting materials to assess risk and determine loan eligibility.
Underwriting Compliance: Underwrite conventional, portfolio, and secondary market loans in accordance with internal policies, investor guidelines (FNMA, FHLMC, FHA, VA, USDA), and regulatory standards.
Regulatory Oversight: Ensure all documentation complies with applicable laws and regulations, including TRID, RESPA, and HMDA.
Condition Management: Identify and communicate missing or additional documentation required to clear underwriting conditions and move loans toward closing.
Decision Communication: Clearly and promptly communicate underwriting decisions and conditions to loan officers, processors, and, when appropriate, to customers.
Team Collaboration: Work closely with mortgage team members to resolve application issues and facilitate efficient, timely loan closings.
Documentation Management: Maintain organized and thorough loan files and records to ensure audit readiness and regulatory compliance.
Customer Service: Provide outstanding service in every interaction, reflecting the bank’s community focused values and commitment to personalized support.
Industry Awareness: Stay current with changes in mortgage regulations, underwriting best practices, and investor requirements to ensure ongoing compliance and quality.

Skills & Qualifications

Underwriting Experience: 3-5 years of recent DE underwriting experience required, with strong knowledge of FNMA, FHLMC, FHA, and VA guidelines; USDA experience preferred.
Technology Proficiency: Experience with automated underwriting systems (DU/LP) required; Encompass software experience preferred.
Regulatory Knowledge: Solid understanding of mortgage compliance requirements including TRID, RESPA, and HMDA.
Analytical & Decision-Making: Strong attention to detail and sound judgement in evaluating credit risk and loan eligibility.
Communication & Integrity: Clear, professional communication skills and a high level of discretion in handling confidential information.
Education & Certification: High school diploma or GED required; associate or bachelor’s degree preferred. DE/CHUMS certification preferred.
Customer Service Orientation: Commitment to delivering excellent customer service aligned with our values.
Organizational Skills: Ability to manage multiple loan files, maintain detailed records, and adhere to deadlines.
Teamwork: Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues to facilitate timely and accurate loan processing.
