Duties
- Manage and oversee all aspects of accounting functions including general ledger reconciliation, accounts payable and receivable, and cash management.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles), IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards), SOX (Sarbanes-Oxley Act), and other regulatory requirements relevant to nonprofit and governmental accounting.
- Prepare accurate financial reports, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements, supporting transparency and informed decision-making.
- Conduct detailed financial analysis and account analysis to identify trends, variances, and opportunities for cost savings or process improvements.
- Lead the month-end and year-end closing processes, ensuring timely completion of financial close activities.
- Utilize financial software such as QuickBooks, Sage, Xero, or similar platforms for efficient data entry, reporting, and analysis.
- Perform budget forecasting and variance analysis to support organizational planning efforts.
- Manage treasury functions including cash flow forecasting, banking relationships, and regulatory reporting requirements.
- Supervise accounting when applicable, providing guidance on technical accounting issues such as double entry bookkeeping, payroll processing, and regulatory compliance accounting.
- Maintain strict adherence to internal controls aligned with SOX compliance standards; implement improvements as needed.
Experience
- Proven experience in accounting roles with a focus on nonprofit or governmental sectors preferred; public accounting experience is highly valued.
- Strong background in financial report writing, account reconciliation (including balance sheet reconciliation), and financial analysis.
- Familiarity with financial software such as QuickBooks, Sage, Xero or similar tools; proficiency in Excel data analysis is essential.
- Excellent understanding of treasury management practices, including accounts payable/receivable processes and cash flow forecasting.
- Ability to interpret financial data into clear reports for diverse stakeholders; strong technical accounting skills are required.
An applicant could be a semi-retired or an independent contractor working with multiple clients. Prefer local in the Ft Lauderdale area or in a 30-mile radius. There will be onsite sessions and remote.
