We are seeking an enthusiastic, organized, and relationship-oriented professional to lead our volunteer program and foster a vibrant volunteer community. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys connecting with people, teaching and mentoring others, and creating meaningful experiences that inspire volunteers to become lifelong ambassadors for our mission.
The Part-Time Volunteer and Community Engagement Manager will ensure that volunteers are prepared, confident, and appreciated while building a culture that strengthens community and supports the continued growth of Three Gaits. This position has the potential to grow into more hours and deeper responsibilities.
Under the general direction of the Executive Director and in collaboration with the Program & Operations Director, the VCEM is responsible for recruiting, training, scheduling, supporting, and recognizing volunteers who are essential to delivering safe, high-quality equine-assisted services to children and adults with disabilities.
· Communicates with the ED, instructor staff and Program Manager to understand needs for volunteers, position requirements and training.
· Communicates in a welcoming, professional and courteous manner.
· Works an annual average of 20 hours per week as determined by organizational needs
· Flexible work hours, however, a consistent and regular presence on the farm is required.
· All systems may be accessed remotely.
Essential Responsibilities
Volunteer Recruitment and Outreach
- Develop and implement strategies to recruit and retain volunteers.
- Cultivate relationships with schools, universities, businesses, civic groups, churches, and community organizations.
- Coordinate volunteer inquiries, applications, and onboarding processes.
- Maintain a pipeline of prospective volunteers to meet current and future program needs.
Volunteer Training and Development
- Coordinate volunteer orientations and ongoing training programs.
- Develop and maintain training materials and resources.
- Provide opportunities for coaching and mentorship to new volunteers.
- Ensure volunteers understand safety procedures and are prepared for their assigned roles.
- Work collaboratively with instructors and staff to identify training needs and opportunities for volunteer advancement.
Volunteer Scheduling and Program Support
- Coordinate volunteer schedules to ensure adequate staffing for lessons, events, and special programs.
- Maintain volunteer records, certifications, background checks, and service hours.
- Communicate schedules, updates, and program information in a timely manner.
- Collaborate with program staff to anticipate volunteer needs and respond to changing program demands.
Volunteer Engagement and Recognition
- Foster a welcoming, inclusive, and mission-focused volunteer culture.
- Develop creative volunteer appreciation and recognition programs.
- Coordinate volunteer appreciation events and milestone celebrations.
- Share stories and impact that connect volunteers to the mission of Three Gaits.
- Encourage experienced volunteers to mentor and support new volunteers.
Community Building and Leadership
- Build relationships that strengthen the sense of belonging among volunteers.
- Promote teamwork, collaboration, and positive communication.
- Serve as a resource and advocate for volunteers throughout their experience.
- Address concerns and conflicts professionally and constructively.
- Help create a volunteer community that reflects the values and mission of Three Gaits.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate volunteer records and databases.
- Prepare reports as needed.
- Assist with special events and fundraising activities.
- Utilize volunteer management software and office technology effectively.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience managing volunteers or leading community engagement initiatives.
- Experience in nonprofit organizations, education, recreation, or equine programs.
- Knowledge of equine-assisted services or willingness to learn.
- Experience developing training materials and facilitating group instruction.
- Familiarity with volunteer management software.
