Full Job Description

Position Summary:

The Lead Teacher is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the assigned classroom, including the supervision of children, paraprofessionals, and volunteers. This role ensures the delivery of high-quality early childhood education by creating a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate learning environment. The Lead Teacher is also responsible for lesson planning, child assessments, maintaining compliance with regulatory standards, and fostering strong relationships with families and staff.

Key Responsibilities:

Actively engage with children to support their physical, emotional, social, and cognitive development
Plan, implement, and evaluate developmentally appropriate lesson plans and classroom activities
Manage daily classroom operations, including supervision of staff, volunteers, and children
Maintain compliance with standards set by regulatory and accrediting bodies (e.g., Department of Human Services, NAEYC, Keystone STARS)
Maintain accurate documentation, including anecdotal records, lesson plans, assessments, and incident/accident reports
Ensure classroom is clean, organized, safe, and conducive to learning
Communicate regularly and professionally with parents/guardians regarding student progress, concerns, and daily activities
Conduct parent-teacher conferences and participate in meetings regarding child development and planning
Support individualized plans (e.g., IEPs, IPPs, L.A.P.) and maintain proper documentation
Supervise and mentor paraprofessionals within the classroom
Maintain attendance records, meal documentation, and required reporting forms
Coordinate classroom schedules, including staff responsibilities and breaks
Report concerns, needs, and updates to Center Management in a timely manner
Participate in home visits when applicable
Perform additional duties as assigned by Center Management

Qualifications:

Education:

Bachelor’s degree (BA or BS) in Early Childhood Education (ECE) required

Experience:

Minimum of two (2) years of experience teaching young children
Experience in classroom management, lesson planning, and child assessment
Experience working in regulated early childhood environments preferred

Skills & Competencies:

Strong knowledge of child development and early learning practices
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to manage a classroom and supervise staff effectively
Strong organizational and documentation skills
Ability to build relationships with children, families, and staff
Ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization and with external partners

Preferred Qualifications:

Valid Pennsylvania Instructional Certification Level II (Pre-K–4) preferred
Experience with Keystone STARS, NAEYC accreditation, or similar quality frameworks

Certifications & Requirements:

Valid PA Instructional Level I or Level II Certification (Pre-K–4)
Proof of passing PreK–4 PECT exam (Modules 1–3)
Required clearances: criminal background, child abuse, FBI fingerprinting, TB test, and health certificate

Completion of required trainings:

Health & Safety
Mandated Reporter
CPR & First Aid
Fire Safety
24 PQAS hours per school year

Working Conditions:

Classroom-based environment with frequent interaction with young children. May require occasional lifting of children and classroom materials. Responsibilities may extend beyond the physical classroom setting (e.g., home visits, meetings).

Physical Demands:

Ability to lift children and classroom materials, sit on the floor, bend, and move actively throughout the classroom as needed.
