Full Job Description

Who we are:

Flatbush Cats is a Brooklyn-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit working to reduce overcrowded animal shelters in New York City and prevent more cats from ending up on the street in the first place. What began as a grassroots rescue effort has grown into a citywide organization addressing the root causes through affordable veterinary care, access to spay/neuter services, and community outreach.

As an independent nonprofit—not backed by venture capital, private equity, or a corporate veterinary network—we make decisions based on our mission. We recruit team members who are passionate about expanding access to veterinary care and measure success by how many pets and families we can help, not production targets.

At the heart of our work is Flatbush Veterinary Clinic, a high-volume nonprofit clinic serving low-income pet owners, rescue organizations, and Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) volunteers throughout Brooklyn. Each year, the clinic performs more than 7,500 spay/neuter surgeries—a number that continues to grow—while providing affordable wellness and dental care to thousands of pets.

By combining high-quality veterinary care with a commitment to accessibility, we're helping keep pets with their families while creating a city where more people and pets can receive the support they need.

What you’ll do:

As an HQHVSN Veterinarian, you’ll focus exclusively on high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter surgery in a fast-paced nonprofit clinic. This role is centered on surgical efficiency, patient safety, and delivering consistent, high-quality care in a mission-driven environment dedicated to increasing access to affordable veterinary services.

You’ll work closely with a skilled technical and support team in a collaborative setting designed to support high surgical volume while maintaining strong clinical standards.

Work Schedule:

This is a full-time position with a four-day workweek with one of the following schedules: Monday–Thursday or Tuesday–Friday. Specific schedule assignments will be determined based on clinic needs and candidate availability.

What you’ll get:

We welcome applications from both new graduate and experienced veterinarians, with compensation determined by experience, clinical competency, and availability.Starting pay will depend on experience, training, education, surgical proficiency, and organizational needs.

Experienced HQHVSN Veterinarian

The target hiring range for this role is $160,000–$165,000 annually.
Additional compensation may be considered based on clinical scope, including wellness shifts, experience level, and demonstrated surgical capacity. For HQHVSN-only roles, compensation is also informed by a clinical skills assessment to determine final placement within range.
Additional Compensation
This role is eligible for a $10,000–$15,000 sign-on bonus, based on experience and availability, structured as follows:
50% paid upon hire
50% paid after one year of employment, contingent upon satisfactory performance and continued employment in good standing

New Graduate HQHVSN Veterinarian

The target hiring range for this role is $150,000–$152,000 annually.
Veterinarians who successfully complete a first-year operational and clinical assessment may be eligible for a merit increase, with an anticipated salary range of $155,000–$158,000 annually.
Additional Compensation
Relocation assistance: Eligible candidates may receive a relocation bonus of $5,000–$10,000, based on individual circumstances
Performance Bonus: Eligible for an additional $5,000 discretionary bonus upon completion of 12 months of employment, based on individual performance, achievement of clinical goals, and organizational needs.

Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) fully funded to cover the plan deductible, with funding levels based on coverage tier (employee-only, employee + spouse, or family)
Flexible Spending Account (FSA) with optional employee enrollment
$500 annual employer contribution to the FSA, provided regardless of enrollment, plus an additional employer match of up to $500 for employees who enroll
401(k) retirement plan with employer match: 100% match on the first 3% of contributions, plus 50% match on contributions up to 5%
Transit and parking benefit: $60 monthly employer contribution, applicable to either transit or parking at the employee’s discretion

Responsibilities:

HQHVSN Surgical Care

Perform high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter surgeries on cats and dogs within established clinic protocols
Conduct pre-surgical examinations and determine patient suitability for anesthesia and surgery
Identify contraindications and appropriately defer patients per clinical guidelines
Independently manage routine and complex anesthetic, surgical, and post-operative cases with support from clinical staff
Respond to and stabilize anesthetic and surgical complications as needed
Maintain patient safety, surgical efficiency, and consistent clinical standards
Ensure accurate and timely medical recordkeeping

Team Collaboration & Operations

Collaborate closely with veterinarians, technicians, and support staff to ensure efficient daily workflow
Participate in case coordination and support team-based clinical decision-making
Contribute to a positive, mission-driven clinic culture
Maintain accurate and timely medical records

Qualifications:

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree or equivalent from an AVMA-accredited institution
Licensed and in good standing in New York State, or eligible to obtain licensure prior to start date
Active DEA license, or ability to obtain prior to start date (clinic will cover initial registration and renewal fees, where applicable)
Proficiency in high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter (HQHVSN) surgery, or strong interest in developing surgical skills in this setting
Ability to work efficiently in a high-volume surgical and anesthesia environment while maintaining patient safety and quality standards
Strong clinical judgment with ability to assess surgical and anesthetic risk and make sound decisions independently and collaboratively
Commitment to low-stress handling and compassionate patient care, particularly in a high-throughput setting
Strong communication and teamwork skills with veterinarians, technicians, and support staff
Adaptability, professionalism, and resilience in a fast-paced, mission-driven surgical environment
Commitment to continuous learning, surgical skill development, and high-quality patient outcomes

The clinic provides professional liability coverage for services performed within the scope of employment. Veterinarians are responsible for obtaining and maintaining any individual liability insurance they choose to carry, including AVMA Professional Liability Insurance.
