Full Job Description

Emma Kaufmann Camp is located along Cheat Lake in Morgantown WV. Owned and operated by the Jewish Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh, EKC is a co-ed residential camp with an emphasis on teambuilding, developing positive values, independence, premiere programming and activities. This child-centered environment includes campers ages 6-16. As a staff member at EKC, you will enjoy the opportunity for personal growth and develop friendships that will last a lifetime. General Responsibility:

Counselors are responsible for the daily care, safety, and well-being of the campers in their assigned cabin. They should serve as positive role models, putting campers first and creating an environment built on respect, inclusion, and fun. Counselors are expected to set clear expectations, follow through consistently, and use good judgment in all situations. They work closely with and report to their Unit Heads to ensure each camper has a meaningful and successful experience. Residency at Emma Kaufmann Camp is required for the duration of the camp session. This position is an “in-residence” position, requiring staff to live onsite during employment. Dates for the summer are June 14 – August 9, with days off.

Desired Qualifications:

Prior experience working with children in a camp, educational, or recreational setting

Enthusiasm for creating a fun, inclusive, and supportive environment for all campers

Ability to be a positive role model and promote teamwork, respect, and personal growth

Willingness to take direction, accept feedback, and work collaboratively with peers and supervisors

Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Flexibility, patience, and creativity in adapting to the dynamic camp environment

Capacity to work effectively both as part of a team and independently when needed

Responsibilities/Expectations:

Attend General Staff Orientation, June 14-20, 2026

Ensure the health, safety, and well-being of all campers in your care

Create a welcoming, inclusive, and positive cabin environment where every camper feels safe, supported, and valued

Provide active and attentive supervision of campers at all times

Help campers understand and follow all camp rules and expectations

Model positive behavior, responsibility, and respect in every aspect of camp life

Participate fully with your campers in all camp activities and programs

Work collaboratively with your Unit Head and co-counselors to maintain a safe, engaging, and well-run cabin and unit

Share responsibility for cabin management and camper care with your co-counselors

Maintain professional boundaries with all campers; physical or emotional relationships are strictly prohibited

Plan and lead engaging evening programs, unit activities, and Counselor’s Choice programs

Teach or assist in program areas based on your skills, interests, and training

Arrive on time and prepared for all activities, meetings, and responsibilities

Use camp equipment, materials, and spaces responsibly and help ensure they are properly cared for

Additional Responsibilities:

Set a good example for campers including cleanliness, punctuality, sharing cleanup and chores, and sportsmanship

Follow camp rules and regulations

Keep a clean and tidy cabin and living space

Complete duties as assigned

Attend all staff meetings as directed

Encourage respect for personal property, camp equipment and facilities

Manage personal time off in accordance with camp policy

Additional responsibilities as assigned

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

While performing the above duties, this position routinely requires handling persons and/or objects and moving safely throughout the building. This position may include walking, sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling. This position requires communicating, either verbally or in writing. This position frequently requires moving items weighing up to 25 pounds. This position occasionally requires moving items weighing up to 50 pounds. Must be able to complete all essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations.
