Full Job Description

Overview

Kingsbridge Heights Community Center (KHCC) is a 51 year old multi-service not-for-profit organization based on the settlement house model and located in the Bronx. We provide resources for Bronx residents from cradle to career to advance education and well-being for a vibrant community. KHCC serves over 5,000 families annually with an inclusive environment for children with special needs, low-income families, recent immigrants, survivors of sexual and domestic abuse, and at-risk teens. KHCC helps participants overcome adversity and develop the skills they need to build bright futures.

The KHCC Youth Program teams are currently seeking group leaders and activity specialists to round out our center and school-based COMPASS and SONYC programs. College students or community educators with some youth work experience, and at least one (1) specialty skill sets in the arts, STEM, dance, or conflict resolution are encouraged to apply. Their primary responsibility is leading activities, and supervising/engaging with elementary and middle school aged youth participants. The essential functions of the roles include, but are not limited to the duties listed in the job description below:

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

Lead groups of 20-30 students from K-8th grades through a full schedule of afterschool activities (or weekend, break camp, etc.)
Provide a positive, safe, fun and memorable quality experience to all participants and families involved in the KHCC Youth programs.
Plan and implement age appropriate and creative activities across themed based areas such as sports and recreation, leadership, STEM, outdoor education, literacy and the creative arts.
Collaborate with fellow team members and support staff, including program directors, SYEP workers, youth workers, MSW Interns, and recreation/educational specialists and staff/lifeguards at trip venues.
Work with the directors and other staff to develop theme based hands-on lesson plans and project based activity ideas
Apply positive youth development principles, age appropriate behavioral intervention, and conflict resolution skills to daily
Assist program participants with developing social-emotional learning skills through group based check-ins and team building activities designed to foster trust and openness in the group.
Assist and supervise participants during snack and meals, and other unstructured social and recreation times, including off-site trips and all program/camp events
Provide task-supervision to SYEP workers/youth workers or other volunteers assigned to work with your group/participants.
Attend weekly team meetings, orientation, and training as scheduled
Perform any other duties as assigned by supervisor/s

Kingsbridge Heights Community Center reserves the right to add to, delete, change or modify the job duties.

Qualifications:

Bilingual Spanish is a plus; High School Diploma/GED required, some college preferred.
Ability to work at least 5 days a week after school and/or 4 days after school and Saturdays. Afternoon schedules vary with 3, 4, and 5 hour shifts depending on site, age group, etc.
Some longer days for staff meetings or in-school activities; ability to work 2-3 days during full-day holiday break programming as possible (summer options).
Basic computer literacy skills, with knowledge of Google Suite a plus.
Minimum one year of experience with youth and/or families in busy community based youth development settings (e.g. afterschool programs, camps, etc.)
Creative, engaging, and proactive approach with young people and their families.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; handle, or feel; talk, hear, smell or taste. On rare occasions it may be necessary to move quickly, run, etc. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.

Schedule:

15-25 hours /week + as needed Mon/Tue/Wed/Fri: 2:30 pm-7:30 pm, in 3, 4, and 5 hour shifts based on site/program area. Alternate work schedule as agreed during full-day camps when schools are closed (at minimum, 1 week in February and April). Summer openings for full day camps as available.
