Full Job Description

Lead Software Engineer / SDET – VL Autonomy Program (Caterpillar)

Role Overview

Supports the VL Autonomy program under Fleet Management at Caterpillar
New headcount request – Lead Software Engineer/SDET to spearhead SIT automation framework expansion
Drive overall test strategy for the program
Develop test automation code for CI/CD systems, infrastructure, and frameworks
Design, develop, and maintain API test automation framework for scripting, execution, and results analysis
Provide technical leadership and mentoring for test engineers (onshore & offshore)
Train team members to build and maintain automated regression suites
Collaborate with Product Owner on issues, enhancements, and functionality usage
Develop automated functional scripts (Java, Karate, JMeter)
Perform exploratory and manual testing as needed
Provide expertise in testing methodologies, best practices, and standards
Work within a larger team of 20+ members
Participate in AVT calls, design discussions, and cross-functional coordination
Hybrid onsite role (Chicago office) starting Day 1, with eventual full onsite requirement (5 days/week)

Required Education

Bachelor’s degree (required)
10+ years of overall professional experience
5+ years in a Lead role (must have led at least 5 QE engineers simultaneously)

Required Technical Skills

8+ years in test automation framework design
5+ years of strong design & development in Java
3–5 years with BDD tools (Cucumber, JBehave, etc.)
3–5 years of API testing (REST APIs)
Strong SQL / relational database query skills
Proven experience in full-stack testing, 3rd-party integration, and end-to-end system integration testing
Hands-on with CI/CD tools (Jenkins, Git)
Experience developing test scripts, test cases, and test data

Desired Technical Skills (Nice-to-Have)

Python programming experience
AWS Cloud development background
3+ years in performance testing with JMeter
Experience with API gateways (Apigee or similar)
Familiarity with TDD, continuous integration, and code review practices
Understanding of microservices architecture
Load & performance testing exposure
Strong documentation skills

Required Soft Skills

Ability to adapt quickly in complex environments
Proactive, flexible, and creative mindset
Excellent communication and collaboration skills with developers and business users

Pay: $70.00 - $72.00 per hour
