About us

Neighborhood Schoolhouse is an independent school in Brattleboro, Vermont. Our students range from 6 weeks through third grade At Neighborhood Schoolhouse we strive to provide stimulating programs to assist our students in becoming initiators of positive change in the community and world. It is believed that by giving the children the opportunity to learn by direct experience, inductive reasoning may develop naturally, and ultimately these children can grow into responsible, independent thinkers.

Job Description
The Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Coordinator supports the social-emotional and behavioral development of children ages 6 weeks through third grade attending Neighborhood Schoolhouse. This position works collaboratively with teachers, families, administrators, and outside service providers to promote inclusivity, strengthen classroom environments, and ensure children receive the individualized support they need.

Job Responsibilities

CLASSROOM SUPPORT & BEHAVIOR INTERVENTION:

Observe children in classroom settings and identify strengths, needs, and potential barriers to learning.
Provide direct classroom support during challenging transitions or periods of increased behavioral need.
Maintain appropriate documentation of observations and interventions.
Oversee the implementation of behavior plans and their accommodations.
Providing occasional lunch break coverage for teachers or filling in as a “substitute,” as staffing needs allow.

SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING:

Support implementation of the Second Step curriculum across age-appropriate classrooms.
Participate in the early MTSS implementation cohort as a leadership team member.
Promote and model developmentally appropriate practice and positive behavior guidance.
Assist teachers in embedding SEL concepts throughout the curriculum.

FAMILY SUPPORT AND REFERRAL COORDINATION:

Partner with families to address concerns related to social-emotional development and behavior challenges.
Provide guidance and resources to families regarding developmental evaluations, referrals, and support services.
Support families throughout referral processes with outside organizations.
Attend meetings with families and service providers as needed.
Maintain respectful and confidential communication with families regarding child progress and support plans.

COLLABORATION WITH SERVICE PROVIDORS:

Serve as the primary liaison between Neighborhood Schoolhouse and outside specialists.
Coordinate communication between providers and teaching staff.
Ensure recommendations from specialists are appropriately shared and implemented within the classroom setting.

STAFF TRAINING & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:

Provide coaching, mentoring, and consultation to teaching staff regarding social-emotional development and behavior support.
Facilitate professional development on topics such as positive behavior guidance, trauma-informed practices, universal design for learning, and Pyramid Model implementation.
Support new staff orientation related to behavior guidance and social-emotional development.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education, Social Work, Psychology, Human Services, Special Education, or related field, or equivalent experience.
Experience working with young children exhibiting a variety of social-emotional and behavioral needs.
Knowledge of child development and developmentally appropriate practice.
Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and establish positive relationships with families and professionals.
Love of nature and comfortable being outside in all weather.
