Sigma Kappa / Alpha Mu chapter on the campus of University of Michigan is seeking a head cook/chef for our resident chapter House. This position is full-time (40 hrs. per week) with opportunities for overtime. Shift would be approximately noon to 7pm / 4 days per week with one longer day that includes a brunch.
You’ll have the freedom to design menus that showcase your talents and the flexibility to make some of our residents’ favorites. Our meals are served buffet style, and we house between 60-65 residents each year. You will create fresh, healthy, and delicious meals for our residents and their guests.
This position is seasonal. You will be working from mid-August to mid-December. Then early January to early May, with a week off for Spring Break. You will be eligible to collect unemployment when not working.
Objective/Summary:
Responsible for the entire food service program of the House, using fresh & healthy ingredients and always served with a smile.
Preferred Education and Experience:
- · Culinary Arts degree and/or a minimum of 2-5 years of cooking and/or catering experience. Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of food preparation, kitchen management, menu planning, organization, and leadership.
- · Must possess or be able to obtain and maintain a current ServSafe Food Protection Manager certificate (or equivalent from a nationally recognized or approved certification program).
- Preference for female candidates, as you will be working in a House with 65 young women.
Essential Functions:
§ Order, stock, prepare and serve food to residents at our Sorority House. Prepare nightly dinners, using primarily fresh ingredients and very few processed and/or frozen foods. Follow standard safety practices in use of kitchen equipment and utensils.
§ Develop and post weekly menus.
§ Working with the House Director to keep food costs under allotted budget.
§ Receive inventory from nearly daily trucks. Stock all supplies/staples coordinating with the day Cook and her grocery requirements.
§ Provide excellent customer service and professionalism when dealing with our residents’ needs, requests, and concerns in a timely manner.
§ Follow very carefully any dietary restrictions and allergies such as gluten, dairy, nuts, etc.
§ Prepare occasional special event meals such as during recruitment, Dads Weekend BBQ, Moms Weekend Brunch, etc. and as required.
§ Maintain the kitchen and all food handling and service areas in accordance with public health guidelines and the highest/freshest cleanliness and sanitation quality regulations.
§ Perform routine assignments such as dishwashing, mopping, garbage removal, etc.
§ Being a team player with a small House staff.
§ All other duties as assigned and/or agreed upon with the House Director.
Work Location/Environment:
This job operates in a kitchen environment, housed with equipment such as ovens, stoves, dishwashers, steamers, mixers and chefs’ knives. The employee is frequently exposed to heat, steam, and noise.
