Staff Accountant — Small Business · Richmond Hill GA

Cornerstone Accounting Solutions · (Eastern time zone preferred) · Full-time $22–28/hour to start (~$45,760–58,240 annualized), with real, structured room to grow.

About us

We're a small, boutique firm doing the back-end accounting for around 100 owner-led small businesses — salons, restaurants, trades, property management, e-commerce, and more. Seven years in, five of us, fully remote. We run on QuickBooks Online, Gusto, Notion, and AI tools wired into almost everything we do. And no — this isn't a 60-hour-a-week shop.

The role

This is a growth role, and we mean it literally. You'll start by doing the work — categorizing and reconciling in QBO, running month-end close on small cash-basis clients, keeping books accurate, building and following SOPs. Over 12–18 months you'll grow into owning a portfolio of your own clients: managing the relationship and the accounting, end to end.

We build you up deliberately — simple clients first, then more as you're ready. Nobody gets thrown in the deep end.

Read this honestly. It matters more than the technical stuff, and it's where most people who don't work out actually fall down.

The people who do best here are hungry and genuinely self-motivated — and they pair that drive with tight communication. Not one or the other. Both. If you only have the first half, this is the wrong seat.

You figure things out. Hit something you don't know? You check the SOP, search the software, ask the AI, look it up — before you raise your hand.
And you communicate — early. The worst failure mode on this team isn't a mistake, it's silence. If something's stuck, at risk, or a client's unhappy, we hear it from you fast. Self-motivated does not mean heads-down and quiet. The strongest people here move fast and check in constantly. Autonomy is earned by showing your work, not by going dark.
You own mistakes and turn them into process. No defensiveness, no cover-ups.
You take feedback without taking it personally. Our reviews are nitpicky on purpose. If you "know the textbook right way" and can't flex when a cash-basis client needs it done differently (legal and sensible, just not GAAP), this won't fit.
You follow the rhythm. When we set a cadence — do this, review together, then the next thing — you run inside it instead of relitigating it. That's how you earn a longer leash.
You're flexible and quietly reliable. Small-business accounting is controlled chaos. You roll with it and care about doing it right more than looking right.

If you want a rigid, fully-built machine to slot into, that's not us. If you want to help build something and grow with it, that's exactly us.

What you'll need

Roughly 3–5 years of hands-on bookkeeping/accounting — less is fine if you're sharp, hungry, and can prove the fundamentals.
Solid fundamentals: reconcile bank and credit card accounts, book a journal entry, run a month-end close without hand-holding.
QuickBooks Online experience, and comfort learning new software fast.
Strong written and verbal communication.
Nice to have (not required): a degree in accounting or a related field; multi-client or firm experience; exposure to our industries; curiosity about AI in accounting.

What we offer

$55k - $60k to start, with a clear path up. We do defined pay reviews at 90 days and again at 6 months, tied directly to the clients and responsibilities you've taken on — not vague "we'll see." As you grow into owning a portfolio, your rate grows with it.
