Remote / Hybrid, with potential site visits to the U.S. Virgin Islands
Preference for candidates based in or familiar with the U.S. Virgin Islands
About the Role
PowerTek USA LLC is seeking a USVI Licensed Electrical Professional Engineer to support upcoming solar, battery energy storage, and resilient energy engineering assignments for public-sector and grant-funded energy projects in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The selected professional will provide senior electrical engineering leadership, technical review, design certification, permitting support, and quality assurance for solar PV, battery energy storage systems, microgrid-related infrastructure, electrical interconnection, load analysis, conceptual design, and bid-ready engineering documentation.
This role is intended for an experienced engineer who can serve as the licensed engineering authority for applicable deliverables, including engineering calculations, electrical schematics, design packages, permit documentation, independent cost estimates, and technical review of contractor bid submissions.
Mandatory Requirement
Candidates must hold an active Professional Engineer license in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
A PE license in another U.S. jurisdiction is helpful, but USVI PE licensure is mandatory for this role. Candidates must be able to provide license number, status, and expiration date during the screening process.
Key Responsibilities
The selected candidate will support PowerTek’s technical team in delivering electrical engineering and project support services for solar and battery storage projects. Responsibilities will include:
- Lead or review electrical engineering work related to solar PV, battery energy storage systems, resilient energy systems, and microgrid-related infrastructure.
- Perform or oversee critical load analysis, electrical load assessment, equipment sizing, and site-specific system design calculations.
- Provide engineering review and certification for applicable project deliverables, including drawings, calculations, electrical schematics, permit documents, and independent cost estimates.
- Develop and review conceptual design and bid-ready engineering drawings, including approximately 60 percent design packages.
- Support development of system electrical configurations, utility interconnection concepts, equipment specifications, mounting and placement considerations, and electrical upgrade recommendations.
- Prepare, review, or certify permit application materials for submission to Government of the Virgin Islands agencies and other applicable authorities, including forms, sketches, plans, and calculations.
- Provide technical input for renewable energy, battery storage, generator-hybrid, and control-system recommendations.
- Support review of public bid packages and contractor responses for technical completeness, constructability, specification compliance, and design alignment.
- Participate in non-voting advisory review of contractor bids, technical questions, clarifications, and change order requests.
- Support environmental compliance coordination by reviewing plans and provisions from an engineering perspective.
- Coordinate with project managers, design engineers, estimators, CAD staff, subcontractors, local stakeholders, and client representatives.
- Maintain professional engineering standards applicable to public-sector, grant-funded, and USVI-based energy projects.
Required Qualifications
- Active Professional Engineer license in the U.S. Virgin Islands. This is mandatory.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
- Strong experience in electrical engineering design, technical review, and certification of solar PV, battery storage, microgrid, distributed energy, or utility-interconnected power systems.
- Demonstrated experience preparing or reviewing engineering calculations, electrical schematics, permit plans, design drawings, equipment sizing, and cost estimates.
- Familiarity with public-sector engineering deliverables, bid packages, contractor evaluation, and construction-phase engineering support.
- Ability to review technical documents for code compliance, constructability, permitting readiness, and engineering quality.
- Strong understanding of applicable electrical standards and codes, including NEC / NFPA 70, IEEE standards, electrical safety practices, and utility interconnection requirements.
- Ability to act as the responsible licensed professional for applicable engineering deliverables.
- Strong written communication skills and ability to prepare professional technical reports, comments, review memos, and client-facing documentation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Electrical PE discipline strongly preferred.
- Prior experience with Government of the Virgin Islands, Virgin Islands Energy Office, WAPA, or other USVI-based public-sector or utility-related projects.
- Experience with solar PV and BESS projects at public facilities, critical facilities, community infrastructure, or grant-funded resilience programs.
- Experience with FEMA, HUD, CDBG-DR, federal grant-funded infrastructure projects, or similar compliance-driven public programs.
- Familiarity with permitting processes in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
- Experience with PVsyst, Helioscope, ETAP, SKM, CYME, HOMER, AutoCAD, MicroStation, or similar engineering tools.
- Experience supporting procurement packages, contractor bid evaluations, change order reviews, and technical responses during construction or implementation.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate is a senior electrical engineer who combines technical depth with practical project delivery experience. The candidate should be comfortable working with multidisciplinary teams and should be able to review, certify, and guide engineering deliverables for solar and battery storage projects from site evaluation through bid-ready documentation and contractor procurement support.
