About the Position
We’re seeking an Assistant Controller to join our energetic, fast-paced team. This role sits a step above day-to-day bookkeeping point. You’ll review and finalize financial deliverables, build and refine the workflows that keep our team running smoothly, and provide hands-on support to both our internal finance team and our clients’ finance teams.
You’ll work closely with Bookkeepers and Controllers to ensure weekly and monthly deliverables — cash positions, A/P, A/R, payroll, certified payroll, job costing, WIP reporting, bonding & insurance — are accurate, timely, and client-ready. A core part of this role is designing and documenting workflows: identifying where processes break down, building better ones, and making sure the whole team (ours and our clients’) knows how to follow them.
Our ideal candidate has worked in a senior accounting or controller-track role in the construction, trades, or home services space — someone who has owned the close process, built out procedures from scratch, and enjoys coaching others through them. You’re a natural systems thinker who loves turning chaos into a repeatable process, while still being warm and personable with clients and teammates. This role reports directly to a Controller or CFO and may include oversight of Bookkeepers.
Communication — paired with applied accounting knowledge — is the heart of this role. Daily, you’ll live in a few key inboxes, providing responsive, high-quality communication. When we meet with our clients, it’s on Zoom with cameras on.
Our ideal candidate has worked in the office of a contractor, trade, or home services business with end-to-end accounting responsibility (for example, an office manager who loves the work but wants the flexibility of remote work). You enjoy interacting with staff and clients, are strong with capacity planning and resource allocation, and thrive under deadlines while bringing
warmth to every interaction. You’re tech-savvy, curious, and excited to try new software. This role reports directly to a Controller.
About ProfitWorks
We do things differently at ProfitWorks. We prioritize customer service and treat our clients like family. We value work-life balance and care for our employees. We strive for excellence and emphasize continuous improvement. (And we don’t do taxes.)
ProfitWorks provides Fractional CFO/Controller services to the trades and construction industries. We’re fully remote, with a concierge, advisory-focused business model. By design, we don’t offer tax services, and we don’t work evenings or weekends — we don’t believe a sustainable business requires 50+ hour weeks. That means you’ll have time to meet the school bus at the end of the street or fire up the Traeger for a hot family dinner.
We believe a highly relational approach is what protects our value as AI and automation reshape this industry. We serve hardworking clients with excellence, acting as their fractional/ integrated financial partner — making sure their money has a plan and their local team has support and accountability. We’re the opposite of high-volume compliance work.
Our international team handles the majority of bookkeeping, A/P, A/R prep, job costing, and month-end close and report prep — so this role can focus on review, workflow design, and supporting the people (internal and client-side) who keep everything moving.
Why ProfitWorks
- Longevity and investment in people: several team members have been with us for more than a decade. Our CEO invests in her team, is generous, and wants people to stick around and succeed.
- This role focuses on financial oversight and client relations — supporting team members and ensuring deadlines are met. We’re looking for someone who has lived this work and knows what it takes to keep a construction business running smoothly.
- Most data entry, reconciliations, and report prep are handled by our Accounting team members.
- Our team includes 7 US-based employees and 15+ overseas team members handling the bulk of Jr & Sr. Bookkeeping tasks. You’ll work in a quick, close-knit, remote environment with ample support available when needed.
- We are in high demand, real growth: very few firms offer Controllership services, which means meaningful growth opportunities as we work toward becoming an industry leader. Training and a passion for growth are encouraged and celebrated. There is room for advancement.
- We document everything: every process has SOPs and Loom videos to follow. We’re tech-savvy and always exploring great third-party tools for our clients. Serving a niche industry means you can build true mastery of our service offering.
Compensation & Logistics
- Compensation: $28.00–$34.00 per hour
- Hours: 40 hours per week
- Benefits: 2 weeks’ paid vacation (accrued per working hour)
- Location: Remote — must reside in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, or Montana. This is a W-2 position; your government issued ID must match one of these states to be hired. A note on flexibility: while we deeply value work-life balance, this role has daily deliverables and regular scheduled meetings with our team and clients. This isn’t a work-whenever-you-want role — it’s a structured, deadline-driven role with a warm, personal touch.
