**We are hiring for 2 advocate positions**

1. Swing Shift: Monday & Tuesday 3:00pm-10:30pm (16hrs per week)

2. Swing Shift: Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 3:00pm-10:30pm (23hrs per week)

South Peninsula Haven House is looking for caring individuals who have a desire to serve their community with compassion, dignity, and respect. Advocates serve as the first line of contact with our agency and play important roles rooted in the understanding of trauma informed care.

Haven House is a non-profit agency serving individuals and families impacted by domestic violence and sexual assault. Domestic and sexual violence crosses all ages, racial, ethnic, national orientations, sexual, gender, spiritual, and socioeconomic boundaries. Our mission is to provide compassionate, respectful, and dignified services. We seek open-minded, kind, and empathetic individuals who can remain calm in crises.

A successful Advocate is organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage crises effectively. They can think critically to assess the immediate needs of potential clients and demonstrate empathetic, non-judgmental attitudes towards people impacted by domestic violence. They demonstrate a trauma-informed approach and the ability to relate effectively with people of diverse cultural backgrounds, education, ages, and experiences.

Successful Advocates take initiative, are self-starters, and work independently while communicating well with the rest of the team. They are flexible, have strong time management skills, and can manage multiple demands as this position includes various duties, including telephonic screenings, crisis intervention, and collaborating with community partners. They demonstrate competent computer skills, ability to follow grant-funded and in house data keeping procedures, and excellent verbal and written communication skills.

**Job description**

Position Summary: Part-time position in a residential domestic violence and sexual assault (DV/SA) shelter with varying shift schedules. Duties include maintaining a safe environment and providing 24-hour crisis intervention, advocacy, and ongoing support for adults and children affected by DV/SA and/or accessing services within the facility including identifying issues, assessing needs, and engaging adults and children in developing strategies to resolve participant-identified issues.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

Provide trauma-informed direct services to victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault, including support, advocacy, crisis intervention, safety planning, information, and referrals.
As tasks at shelter vary each day, the Advocate should assist in providing crisis intervention services. These services will include answering 24/7 crisis line and business lines, providing emergency financial assistance if available, individual support, resources, and referral information as needed.
Provide legal advocacy services: assist clients with protective orders, navigate the legal system, court accompaniment, and provide appropriate referrals.
Educating clients about domestic violence issues such as abuse patterns, psychological effects, and available community resources.
Complete intakes and orientate survivors and their children to the shelter as needed and ensure their initial needs are met.
To maintain overnight shelter safety and security, set all alarms, and ensure quiet hours throughout the shelter.
Take appropriate steps to deal with emergency situations with the goal of maintaining the safety of all clients.
Employing strategies to de-escalate volatile situations.
Provide screen-out and follow-up services.
In an effort to ensure 24/7 coverage, Advocate will be on time for their scheduled shift and complete their entire shift without leaving the premises.
Maintaining accurate daily shelter logs, resident and participant files and all other paperwork per our grantor’s requirements and SPHH policies.
Assist with special projects and tasks as assigned by the Shelter Manager and/or Lead Advocate.

**General and Related Responsibilities**

Performing routine maintenance and custodial duties for facility and common use areas, including but not limited to snow shoveling, sanding walkways, yard work, and cleaning/janitorial services.
Attending all mandatory staff meetings and trainings.
Adapt to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.

**Necessary Skills and Experience**

Knowledge or experience working with victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
Attentive to detail, demonstrate emotional maturity, flexible in management of responsibilities, ability to work independently, and creatively problem solve to meet needs of clients.
Must possess advanced computer skills and basic word processing, including knowledge of internet and e-mail.
Ability to respond to crises, set limits, and maintain healthy boundaries.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and volunteers.
Ability to identify and solve problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
Ability to respect confidentiality of information learned through providing services.
Ability to navigate and handle complicated situations.
Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment and take initiative.
Ability to read, interpret, abide by and document required policies and procedures for program operations.
Knowledge of the people, customs, and family relationships in the Southern Kenai Peninsula Region.
Ability to work with people from various social/ethnic/cultural backgrounds.
Demonstrates commitment to equity, diversity, inclusive community, and social justice.
Must be a responsible individual of reputable character who is known to exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, cope with stress and crisis situations in a calm manner and who models non-violent behavior.
High school diploma or equivalent.

**On the Job Training Requirements**

Completion of 6-week 30-hour online domestic violence course as required by the Alaska Network of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault (ANDVSA)
40-hour in-shelter training which will include in and beyond buisness hours
CPR/First Aid training
Any other additional mandatory training for the agency, which is determined by the Executive Director, on an annual basis.
