Opportunity:

GENERAL SUMMARY

The Small Batch Roaster is responsible for roasting small batches on our small batch roasters using Cropster roasting software. This person reports to and works directly with our Head Roaster, following the daily roasting schedule to fulfill our daily orders. The coffees roasted on our small batch roasters are primarily limited lots that are considerably more expensive than conventional coffees, requiring a high degree of attention to detail, dependability, and a careful, methodical approach.

This is a chance to work hands-on with some of the rarest coffees we source, learning directly from our Head Roaster and developing your craft on a professional production roaster. For a detail-oriented person who takes pride in consistency, it’s a role where careful work is visible in the cup every day, with room to grow into greater responsibility over time.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

1. Maintain accurate, repeatable roasts on our small batch roasters using Cropster software.

2. Participate daily in quality assurance and sensory evaluations.

3. Coordinate with production staff to develop daily roasting schedules.

4. Follow all GMPs, lean manufacturing practices, and organic and food safety certifications.

5. Be cross-trained and proficient on the larger roasters to assist when needed.

6. Perform regular maintenance and cleaning of roasting equipment to ensure optimal performance.

7. Troubleshoot and repair equipment as needed, coordinating with external technicians if necessary.

8. Maintain a safe and organized work environment, adhering to all safety protocols.

9. Stay updated with industry trends and advancements in roasting technology.

10. Participate in training and development programs to enhance skills and knowledge.

11. Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education and Experience

· High school diploma or equivalent; additional education in coffee roasting or a related field is a plus.

· Minimum of 2 years of experience in specialty coffee roasting.

· Cropster software experience preferred; we’re willing to train the right candidate

· Sensory/cupping training (e.g., Q Grader) preferred but not required

· Food handler’s or food safety certification preferred

Knowledge of:

· Strong understanding of different coffee bean origins and their flavor profiles.

Skill in:

· Strong time management skills with the flexibility to prioritize scheduled tasks

· Good organizational and record-keeping skills.

· Effective communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to:

· Ability to operate and maintain coffee roasting equipment.

· Strong attention to detail and able to focus on hands-on tasks

· Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and independently with minimal supervision.

POSITION TYPE AND EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

· May work the production floor and/or cupping lab

· Position requires a significant amount of time spent on the manufacturing floor.

· Monday through Friday 8am until 5pm

· Occasional abnormal hours are expected and required on an as-needed basis.

TRAVEL

· Occasional travel within the metropolitan area may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

· This position requires frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions including hot and cold environments on the manufacturing floor from 40 to 120 degrees.

· This position requires standing for long periods of time.

· Incumbents may be required to exert up to up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently.

· Repetitive motion using hands and arms are required to operate equipment.

· This position operates in a frequently high-noise environment.
