Full Job Description

Industrial Electrical Technician – Heavy Industrial / Cast House

Position Summary

The Industrial Electrical Technician is responsible for troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing electrical and control systems across a wide range of industrial equipment operating from medium and high voltage (480V, 3-phase) down to low-voltage control and PLC-based systems (24VDC). This role supports critical production operations in a cast house environment, where reliability, safety, and disciplined troubleshooting are essential.

This position is best suited for an experienced electrical technician who is comfortable working around switchgear, MCCs, VFDs, PLC-controlled equipment, sensors, and industrial networks, and who understands the electrical demands of heavy industrial equipment such as furnaces, material handling systems, saws, pumps, and support systems.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Electrical Troubleshooting & Repair

Troubleshoot and repair industrial electrical systems ranging from 480V, 3-phase power distribution to 24VDC control circuits.
Diagnose faults in switchgear, motor control centers (MCCs), disconnects, breakers, contactors, relays, and overload protection devices.
Perform safe electrical diagnostics using meters, testers, and insulation testing equipment.
Identify root causes of electrical failures, not just symptoms.

Controls & Automation Support

Troubleshoot PLC-based control systems at the field level, including:
Discrete and analog I/O
Proximity sensors, photo eyes, encoders, pressure and temperature devices
Interlocks, permissives, and safety circuits
Support variable frequency drives (VFDs), soft starters, and motor feedback devices.
Work with low-voltage control panels, terminal blocks, power supplies, and industrial networking components as applicable.
Escalate logic changes or advanced programming needs to engineering as required.

Equipment & Cast House Systems

Support electrical systems associated with cast house equipment such as:
Melting and holding furnaces
Combustion and exhaust systems
Pumps, hydraulic power units, and cooling systems
Conveyors, billet handling systems, and saws
Degassing units and ancillary process equipment
Troubleshoot electrical issues caused by high heat, vibration, dust, and harsh industrial conditions.

Preventive & Predictive Maintenance

Perform electrical preventive maintenance on panels, drives, motors, and control systems.
Inspect wiring, terminations, grounding, and enclosures for integrity and compliance.
Identify electrical PM improvements to reduce downtime and nuisance faults.

Safety & Compliance

Strictly follow Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), arc-flash, and electrical safety procedures.
Work within NFPA 70E guidelines and company electrical safety policies.
Verify proper grounding, labeling, and safety device functionality before returning equipment to service.
Maintain all guards, interlocks, and safety systems to required standards.

Documentation & Communication

Accurately document electrical work performed, findings, and recommendations in the CMMS.
Communicate equipment risks, conditions, and corrective actions clearly with production and maintenance leadership.
Support shift-to-shift continuity through detailed documentation and handoffs.

Additional Responsibilities

Assist with equipment installations, upgrades, and retrofits.
Support continuous improvement and reliability initiatives.
Perform other duties as assigned based on operational needs.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities; however, senior-level technicians may provide technical guidance or mentoring to others.

Qualifications Required

High school diploma or GED.
Minimum 3 years of industrial electrical maintenance experience (heavy industrial or manufacturing environment strongly preferred).
Demonstrated experience working on 480V, 3-phase systems down to 24VDC control circuits.
Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, ladder diagrams, panel layouts, and OEM documentation.
Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills in live production environments.

Technical Experience (Preferred)

Switchgear, MCCs, and industrial power distribution.
VFDs, soft starters, and motor protection devices.
PLC platforms (field-level troubleshooting; programming a plus).
Industrial sensors and instrumentation.
High-temperature and high-noise environments typical of cast houses.

Additional

Strong electrical safety awareness; experience working under arc-flash requirements.
Ability to work independently and make sound decisions under pressure.
Consistent attendance; flexibility to work overtime, weekends, and holidays as needed.
Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Advanced electrical troubleshooting and diagnostic capability.
Ability to prioritize electrical issues based on risk, downtime, and safety.
Proficient with multimeters, clamp meters, insulation testers, and diagnostic tools.
Strong communication skills with production, maintenance, and engineering teams.
High attention to detail and commitment to safe, professional workmanship.

Physical & Work Environment

This role requires working in a heavy industrial cast house environment, including exposure to heat, dust, noise, and moving equipment. Physical demands include standing, climbing, lifting, and working around energized equipment in accordance with safety procedures.

Pay: $24.00 - $42.00 per hour

Expected hours: No less than 40.0 per week
