Full Job Description

Job Summary

We are seeking an energetic and highly skilled Port Captain to oversee maritime operations with our vessels. This pivotal role involves managing vessel movements, ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards, and supervising personnel. The Port Captain will be responsible for coordinating and overseeing transportation activities, maintaining equipment, and ensuring smooth, efficient vessel operations. This position offers an exciting opportunity for a motivated professional with a strong background in marine navigation, systems, and team management to lead our vessel operations with confidence and precision.

Crewing

· Recruiting potential candidates for vessel positions

· Properly manning vessels with experienced wheelman for their intended routes

· Periodically visit and ride vessels to evaluate/train crew as needed

· Schedule and execute crew changes

· Verify compliance with licenses and documentation

Policy

· Monitor and ensure compliance with TSMS and other applicable policies and regulations

· Evaluate wheelhouse personnel on knowledge and performance of management of those regs, and their ability to train and maintain crew in those areas

Office/Vessel

· Liaison between vessels and shoreside-including Dispatch, Port Engineers, Crew Dispatch, Safety and Compliance, Purchasing, Admin and Ownership

· Oversee daily voyage planning to ensure tow sizes and arrangements for current and future river conditions. Manage timing and efficiencies of transportation of the tow, fleeting, crew changes, 3rd party onboarding for operations, etc.

· Assist with incident management and investigations

· Work with vessels to ensure they have proper crew experience onboard for their routes

· Make periodic inspections of vessels to ensure equipment is maintained per company standards, including but not limited to maintenance, painting, inventory, etc.

· Ensure policies are established and articulated between shoreside and the vessels. This includes company policy and standards, as well as industry standards, policies and regulations

· Manage budgets throughout vessel needs with operations

Industry

· Stay active with industry communications and manage those to shoreside and vessels

· Attend and represent the company at industry meetings in which shoreside management deems necessary to its operations

· Maintain good relationships with industry partners, public relations and regulatory arms
