Overview

Adelante Schools is a non-profit school management organization in Indianapolis, Indiana, building a network of outstanding public schools in the city serving families with students in grades K-8. Adelante Schools seeks a highly motivated, mission-oriented, reflective teacher to serve as English Language Coordinator & Teacher in a turnaround school setting.

We seek educators who know that all children are capable of excellence, who are committed to continuously improving curriculum and instruction, who are hungry for feedback, and who are always looking for ways to more effectively reach and inspire our students every day in the classroom.

Uniquely, we seek teacher-leaders who are dedicated to being on an instructional team of a turnaround school. We are looking for teacher-leaders who, in close partnership with their principal, teammates, and many others, are eager to do the heavy lifting of identifying reading and math skill gaps in their students and filling them—all while teaching grade-level content and inspiring their students to greatness.

Job Description

The Multilingual Learners Director also known as the MLD serves as a specialist for students who are learning the English language. The MLD works in a program designed to provide direct English Language Development instruction in the classroom, small groups, and/or individual student settings. In addition to this specific individualized instruction, the MLD will assist general education classroom teachers with internalization of appropriate curricula and the development of appropriate strategies to meet the unique needs of multilingual learners.

Specific Responsibilities

Ensuring that all students receive the educational services that they need to succeed.
Training, managing, and supporting the school to ensure all staff are maximally effective in delivering the intervention and support services students need to succeed.
Develop Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) for all MLL students.
Monitor Fluent English Proficient students who have exited MLL services within the last two years.
Maintain cumulative folders with required paperwork for English learners
Run student reports weekly to ensure the accuracy of data
Coordinate administration of required language proficiency (W-APT/ACCESS) and academic achievement tests within the required time frame.
Provide language development support via push-in or pull-out model
Utilize WIDA framework and standards in the development of lesson plans
Employ a variety of instructional techniques and teaching strategies to meet different aptitudes of students, including whole group (co-teaching)/small-group or individual learning.
Actively participate in Weekly Data Meetings and Observation/Feedback Meetings, preparing, crafting, and following up with key “See It, Name It, Do It” action steps with coach
Preparing for and facilitating student support meetings with students on their caseload, including communicating with teachers and other staff members prior to and after the meeting.
Attend IEP, 504, or other related meetings necessary for student assessment and/or compliance with federal and/or state law.
Implement social-emotional strategies to build a positive self-image in English learners
Support school-wide staff in strategies to best academically, culturally, and operationally serve the needs of MLL students and families
Implement curricula and activities to meet academic standards
Implement assessments that measure progress towards academic standards, and use assessment data to inform instructional practices
Designing and administering rigorous, standards-based assessments and using assessment data to refine curriculum and instruction.
Engage in regular trainings with school leaders to benefit from targeted, in-the-moment feedback on instruction
Participate in collaborative curriculum internalization practices, grade-level activities, and school-wide functions
Identifying incoming students’ MLL needs, as indicated by the Home Language Survey responses
Provide consistent rewards and/or consequences for student behavior
Helping to create a culture of order, structure, and academic rigor in the classroom and school as a whole.
Be accountable for students’ mastery of academic standards
Communicate effectively with students, families, and colleagues
Attend and participate in events outside of normal school hours (e.g., family nights, student performances, field trips, report card nights, Teacher-Family Conferences, etc.)
Participate in an annual three-week summer staff orientation and training
Is present and engaged at the school from 7:10 AM to 4:10 PM, Monday-Friday
Ensuring compliance with all City, State, and Federal special education law and regulations.
Building relationships with other effective MLL programs in other high-performing schools.
Collaborating with other teachers, other school staff, and administrators to ensure that all our students climb the mountain to high school and college.

Evidence of self-motivation and willingness to be a team player
Eagerness for constant observation and feedback
Desire to grow professionally
Deeply rooted belief that children are capable of reaching the highest bars we set for them
Bachelor’s degree is required; Master’s degree is preferred
Minimum of two years teaching experience in an urban public district school or urban public charter school setting.
Valid Indiana State certification or proof of reciprocal licensure in a different state is required. Applicants in Indiana State-approved alternate certification programs must provide proof of enrollment.
