Full Job Description

The Santa Cruz Toddler Care Center is currently hiring a Head Teacher for our outdoor program for one and two year olds!

We are:

a prestigious, well established, RIE inspired nonprofit childcare center with a one: three staff:child ratio.
a small program, with 16 children in the morning, and 12 children in the afternoon., looking to build our morning enrollment to 16 children.
open Monday - Thursdays from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, and on Fridays until 1:00 pm, for paid planning, training and meeting time for teachers.

Head Teacher hours are 7:30 - 4:00, Mondays through Fridays.

We believe that young children thrive outdoors, and have rebuilt our campus to provide a beautifully remodeled, re-landscaped, and extremely toddler-friendly space for one and two year olds and the adults who care for them.

We value anti-bias curriculum, diversity, sustainability, and the dream of each child being able to achieve all they are capable of, with the knowledge that together human beings can make a difference.

We have published a book about our unique philosophy of care, 1,2,3......The Toddler Years, that is widely used in ECE classrooms and parent education programs.

We serve organic vegetarian meals cooked onsite, supplemented by the children's organic vegetable garden.

Job Responsibilities:

Coordinate daily outdoor program;
Provide primary care outdoors for 4 children, ensuring that every child’s needs are met;
Supervise a small team of teachers and aides;
Oversee and set up of environment and developmentally appropriate emergent curriculum;
Supervise policy enforcement for children, staff and families;
Model and implement the RIE philosophy of respect for children as practiced by the Santa Cruz Toddler Care Center.
Develop, model and maintain positive relationships with children, parents, and co-workers.
Commit to and role model green practices in all aspects of the job whenever possible.

Job Requirements:

AA, Teaching Certificate or BA in Early Childhood Education or related field with a minimum of 3 units Infant/Toddler related.
Experience and knowledge of the RIE philosophy and emergent curriculum
3 years teaching experience in licensed childcare program serving 1 and 2 year olds
1 year supervision experience in a licensed child care center or comparable group care situation for children under the age of five (5).
Current Infant/Child CPR certification required.
Health and Safety training as per California State Licensing
Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
Computer and smartphone competency including Zoom, email, text messaging, google docs, word docs and digital photography.
Passionate about nature based early childhood education
Comfortable working with children with differing developmental needs
Able to convey wonder & cheerfulness in all weather
Knowledge of best practices regarding gardening, plants and toddlers.
Warm and caring personality - friendly and approachable to children and families
Willingness to be flexible with job duties and participate fully as a member of a team.
Must be completely up to date with Covid-19 vaccinations as boosters.
