About Invest in Our Future

Invest in Our Future (IOF) is a philanthropic initiative and strategy hub focused on accelerating clean energy deployment and unlocking clean energy benefits for all Americans. IOF brings together the power of philanthropy and partner organizations to unleash the enormous economic potential of clean energy to create good jobs for American workers, generate new investment in American communities, and reduce the pollution that causes climate change. Through our large and diverse portfolio of grantees, we support work to speed siting and permitting of utility-scale projects; grow the market for community-serving, commercial-scale clean energy; expand the clean energy workforce and improve job quality; and build the durable public support needed for faster deployment. We coordinate and work closely with partners to align strategies and focus the field’s resources on the most pressing obstacles holding back clean energy buildout.

Position Overview

The Managing Director of Programs will lead and support a high-performing team of Program Officers and Program Associates to ensure the organization’s grantmaking, convenings, and other programmatic work align with Invest in Our Future’s three-year strategy. The Managing Director of Programs will oversee the program team’s grantmaking and workplan and will strive toward continuous improvement in systems, project management, and program delivery. The Managing Director of Programs will serve on IOF’s leadership team and report to the Executive Director.

The Managing Director of Programs also will work with the program team to understand the broader clean energy landscape, overcome external challenges to implementing IOF’s strategy, and identify opportunities to build new partnerships and tackle emerging issues in pursuit of expedited clean energy deployment.

Pay Range: $215,400 - $265,000. This represents the present low and high end of IOF’s pay range for this position. Actual pay will vary based on various factors, including but not limited to experience.

Work Schedule: Candidates will be considered for the Washington, DC office or remote work. Washington, DC-based employees are on a hybrid work schedule. Current policy requires staff to be in the office on Wednesdays and Thursdays and additionally as necessary.

Travel Requirements: This position may be required to travel up to 25% of the time.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Directly supervise a small team of Program Officers and Program Associates, creating a team environment that fosters open dialogue, continuous improvement, and shared accountability to high standards of performance. Conduct annual performance reviews.

Lead cross-organizational projects for the program team, including drafting funder proposals and reports in partnership with IOF leadership and the funder relations manager.
Work with Program Officers to develop, manage, and execute the team’s annual grantmaking strategy and programmatic calendar, budget, and workplan.
Review Program Officers’ recommendations for grants and provide guidance to Program Officers and IOF leadership on grant scoping, strategy, and relationship management.
As part of IOF’s role as a strategic hub on clean energy deployment, advise Program Officers as they develop funder and stakeholder convenings and leverage new opportunities to align grantees, partners, and other philanthropic organizations.
Work with Program Officers to assess the impact of IOF’s grantmaking, track metrics, and develop and respond to learnings from grantees and other partners.
Implement consistent and professional grantmaking processes in coordination with the Director of Grants Management and the organization’s fiscal sponsor.
Manage a small portfolio of grants, engaging with stakeholders and other funders as necessary to develop a grantmaking strategy, scope potential grantees, and make awards.

Work with members of the program team to overcome external barriers to implementation of IOF’s strategic plan, identify opportunities to build new partnerships, and expand IOF’s strategic impact.
Serve as a member of the IOF leadership team to help shape the organization’s strategic choices and programmatic priorities; recommend new areas for philanthropic intervention; and adjust IOF’s strategy in response to changing market and policy conditions.
Communicate clearly and consistently with the Executive Director and IOF leadership about grantmaking strategy and program outcomes.
Represent IOF externally at convenings, meetings, and other engagements while identifying opportunities for Program Officers to share their expertise.
Build external relationships with key funders and stakeholders as needed to advance IOF’s strategic priorities.
Work cross-functionally with the operations team, Communications Director, and others to ensure program integration and consistency across IOF workstreams.
Identify opportunities to improve IOF’s internal systems to foster the efficiency and effectiveness of the organization’s work, in partnership with the Chief of Staff.

Education, Experience, and Skills

Generally expected to have 12+ years of relevant experience supporting the development and implementation of strategic initiatives related to IOF’s clean energy priorities, such as workforce development, project finance and development, and community and economic benefits.
Prior experience in philanthropy

Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred
5+ years of experience managing people and leading high-performing teams.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Strong project management skills with exceptional attention to detail.
Experience facilitating internal and external meetings toward successful objectives and outcomes.
Ability to manage conflict toward resolution.
Recognizes the value of different perspectives and commits to inclusion, equity, and diversity in every aspect of work.
