Overview
Under the direction of the Airport Fire Chief, the Assistant Fire Chief is responsible for the subordinate level of leadership of emergency response activities and day-to-day operations of the contracted airport site. The Assistant Chief is required to deliver and maintain a compliant and operational rescue and firefighting service, training program management and provide documented facility inspections. We are looking for an experienced and motivated Fire Manager to assist the Airport Fire Chief with airport emergency services, including maintain compliance with emergency procedures as per applicable regulatory and operational requirements to ensure continuity and operational readiness across the airport.
Job Summary
The Assistant Chief oversees the department's comprehensive training program and ensures personnel maintain the knowledge, skills, and certifications necessary to provide Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF), emergency medical response, hazardous materials response (operations level), aircraft fueling operations, alarm response, and fire safety inspections. Working in close partnership with the Airport Fire Chief, the Assistant Chief provides executive-level input and collaborates with airport management, regulatory agencies, mutual aid partners, tenants, and community organizations to promote operational excellence, regulatory compliance, and positive working relationships. The Assistant Chief exercises sound judgment, professionalism, and decisive leadership in a dynamic operational environment. In the absence of the Airport Fire Chief, this position assumes delegated authority and is responsible for making timely operational and administrative decisions to ensure continuity of service and compliance with contractual, regulatory, and governmental requirements.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- The incumbent ensures that the Firefighters maintain a standard of safety and work performance in the execution of their duties. This would include maintaining safe work practices and compliance with company, airport and governmental agency policies, rules, standards, and regulations. Communicating any deficiencies and recommendations for correction to the Airport Fire Chief.
- Assigns, directs, and participates in all firefighting training at the airport for all shifts.
- Supervises all activities of the Firefighters with responsibility for participation in training (initial and recurrent).
- Directs and participates in the inspection of airport facilities, ensuring compliance with fire prevention, life safety, and regulatory requirements through both supervisory oversight and independent inspections.
- Supervises fire incident scene activities in the absence of the Airport Fire Chief
- Serves as the acting Fire Chief during the Fire Chief’s absence, including periods of vacation, illness, business travel, or other authorized leave.
- Assist the Airport Fire Chief in hiring new employees, promotions of existing employees and disciplinary action or termination of an employee according to company policy.
- Assist in the development and enforcement of departmental regulations and standard operating procedures.
- Provides verbal and written performance observations, recommendations, and evaluations to the Airport Fire chief regarding personnel under the Assistant Chief’s supervision, supporting employee development, accountability and performance management.
- Leads, directs, instructs, assists, or assigns in the following areas:
- Supervision and detection of airport safety hazards (inspections)
- Supervision of the Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting/Emergency Response operations during their shift
- Assist the Airport Fire Chief with shift scheduling
- Assist with payroll as needed
- Supervision of the training program to ensure quality instruction is provided by instructors (Teaches 20% of classes each month, conducts quality instruction checks for 20% of classes i.e; evaluates classes, creates/updates lesson plans to match airport activities and validates all training reports)
- Participates in the Vehicle Maintenance Inspection Program.
- Accurately and timely reports all maintenance problems/repairs for the fire station to Airport Maintenance.
- Accurately and timely reports all maintenance problems/repairs for the vehicle fleet to Airport Vehicle Maintenance.
- Accurately completes all reports as they relate to training, compliance and inspections (facility, extinguisher, safety and flammable storage).
- Issues hot work permits and conducts air quality monitoring for confined space entry.
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Airport Fire Chief, Regional Airport Fire Chief and/or Director of the Airport.
Skills and Abilities:
- Effectively leads and communicates to other personnel in the performance of firefighting, lifesaving, and security functions.
- Ability to express self effectively to individuals and groups using good oral, written, and listening skills.
- Ability to speak English and carry out oral and written directions.
- Competent knowledge and experience in fire suppression, tactics, and strategy techniques, particularly as applied to the saving of lives and protecting property.
- Competent knowledge of Fire Department Training programs for multi-hazard response agencies
- Competent knowledge of Fire Inspection programs and fire code applications
- Competent knowledge of the equipment, materials and vehicles required for aircraft fire suppression and lifesaving operations.
- Ability to conduct periodic inspections, as instructed, of the airfield and air operations to include but not limited to FOD checks, airfield operations as stated in the contractor agreement with the airport.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment in determining the appropriate action to be taken relating to job responsibilities. Ability to change outlook, viewpoint, etc. when circumstances dictate.
- Ability to maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties, to include all co-workers/employees and Airport Administration.
- A thorough understanding of and demonstrated experience in NIMS and ICS Incident Command Systems.
- Ability to analyze problems and develop corrective actions to a safe solution.
- Ability to work independently or with minimal assistance to complete tasks assigned by the Fire Chief.
- Working knowledge and proficiency in the operation of computer equipment and software programs used by the department, to include Microsoft Teams, Outlook, Word and Excel as well as fire databases utilized by Pro-Tec Fire Services and airport customers (if applicable).
Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- College Degree (preferred)

- IFSAC, Pro-Board, or TCFP Firefighter I & II
- IFSAC, Pro-Board, or TCFP Airport Firefighter Certification
- IFSAC, Pro-Board, or TCFP Hazmat Awareness & Operations
- IFSAC, Pro-Board, or TCFP Hazmat Incident Commander
- ICS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, & 800
- IFSAC, Pro-Board, or TCFP ARFF Driver/Operator
- CPR/AED certified and NREMT-B or TCFP EMT certified
- IFSAC, Pro-Board or TCFP Fire Officer III Certification or greater
- IFSAC, Pro-Board or TCFP Fire Instructor II Certification or greater
- IFSAC, Pro-Board Fire Inspector II Certification or greater
Certifications & Licenses (Preferred):

Qualifications:
- Must have 10 + years of FF experience with at least 1 + years emphasis on ARFF, preferred. This can be either military, DOD, municipal based or commercial aviation firefighting experience.
- Must have 4 years or more of full-time fire protection management experience as an officer with a minimum of 1 year as a Battalion Chief or higher
Requirements:
- Must be a U.S. Citizen
- Must have and maintain a State issued Driver License
- Must be able to pass a 10-year FBI Criminal History Record Check, and TSA Security Threat Assessment and maintain a SIDA badge. Must not have a DWI.
- This is a drug testing position
- Must be able to pass either a NON-DOT or NFPA 1582 pre-employment and annual occupational health screening.
