Peer Specialist (NYCPS / NYCPS-P)

Location: Brooklyn, NY
Company: Pride Health
Pay Rate: $24/hr

Job Overview

Pride Health is seeking a compassionate and recovery-oriented Peer Specialist to support individuals experiencing behavioral health crises. This role utilizes lived experience, trauma-informed care, and peer support principles to help guests build resilience, achieve recovery goals, and connect with community resources.

The ideal candidate will have firsthand experience navigating the mental health system and a passion for supporting others on their recovery journey.

Available Schedules

Choose from one of the following schedules:

Tuesday–Saturday | 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Tuesday–Saturday | 4:00 PM – 12:00 AM
Sunday–Thursday | 4:00 PM – 12:00 AM
Wednesday–Sunday | 12:00 AM – 8:00 AM

Flexibility for evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays is required.

Key ResponsibilitiesPeer Support & Recovery Services

Develop supportive relationships with guests experiencing behavioral health crises
Utilize lived experience to provide hope, encouragement, and recovery-focused support
Promote a safe, respectful, and welcoming environment
Practice trauma-informed care and Intentional Peer Support (IPS) principles
Assist guests in identifying and achieving short-term recovery goals

Intake & Guest Engagement

Support pre-registration and intake processes
Assist with onboarding, facility orientation, and introductions to staff and peers
Collaborate with community providers and Health Home staff to coordinate services

Group Facilitation & Wellness Activities

Facilitate peer support groups and wellness activities
Lead or assist with WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan) programming
Provide harm reduction education and wellness self-management support
Encourage participation in social and recreational activities

Advocacy & Community Connections

Help guests access healthcare, transportation, housing, and community resources
Advocate for guests experiencing barriers to care
Support successful transitions from hospitals, crisis programs, or incarceration settings

Documentation & Team Collaboration

Complete accurate and timely documentation of services and guest interactions
Participate in supervision, team meetings, case conferences, and training sessions
Assist with data collection and reporting requirements

Daily Living Support

Assist guests with activities of daily living (ADLs) as needed
Support meal preparation and household activities
Encourage independence and personal responsibility

Required Qualifications

Active NYCPS or NYCPS-P Certification Required
High School Diploma or GED
Lived experience with the mental health system and willingness to share appropriately in a peer support setting
Demonstrated ability to work respectfully with individuals experiencing mental health crises
Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working in behavioral health, crisis stabilization, or recovery-oriented programs
Peer Specialist training completion (if not already completed, must be obtained during probationary period)
Experience facilitating peer support groups or wellness activities
Strong de-escalation and problem-solving skills
Proficiency with Microsoft Word and
strongly preferred
