Full Job Description

Pathology Support:

The Pathology Support Associate will perform the various tasks required for receiving, processing, and preparing patient tissue specimens for microscopic examination and analysis by the Pathologist. This may include logging, batching, accessioning, transcribing or editing medical documents, filing and maintaining records as well as equipment maintenance and cleaning. The Pathology Support associate will coordinate daily workflow of tasks and activities in the laboratory with regard to routine procedure and the workload.

Duties/Responsibilities:

· Receives specimens from surgical or diagnostic cases. Insures accurate identification of specimens.

· Accessions and creates worksheet.

· Enters patient and other demographic information in the Dermatopathology computer system accurately and efficiently.

· Assign MRN for PDL cases.

· Accurately performs daily transcription/data entry of pathology reports.

· Enters special stain requests for the Histology Department.

· Ensures accurate and appropriate completion of pathology reports. Performs corrections and correction audits.

· Process consultation cases for send out to another facility.

· File slides and requisitions

· Organized paperwork for pathologist

· Answer phones

· Operates instrumentation for tissue dehydration, section clearing, impregnation with paraffin and staining of slides.

· Prepares solutions, stains, and reagents in accordance with standards written procedures.

· Operates and maintains all histology area lab equipment in proper state of readiness, cleanliness.

· Performs and monitors inventory of supplies, equipment, and reagents used.

· Puts away supplies.

· Disposes of hazardous chemical wastes per regulatory guidelines.

· Shows willingness to assist other laboratory personnel when requested.

· Shows willingness to assist other laboratory personnel as workload permits without being requested to do so.

· Encourages other lab personnel towards professional growth and development by sharing information.

· Keeps current with changes in laboratory procedures.

· Organizes work for effective utilization of time.

· Able to determine priorities when organizing daily assignments.

· Seeks assistance when necessary.

· Disposes of hazardous chemical wastes per regulatory guidelines.

· Maintains strictest confidentiality.

· Complies with all State, Federal, professional regulations as well as company and

· departmental rules, polices, and procedural manuals.

· Adherence to CAP, CLIA, State Regulations, HIPAA, Safety and OSHA Regulations.

· Shows ability to handle unexpected situations and is able to exercise independent thought and action.

· Observes confidentiality, both with patient information and co-workers

· Maintains good interpersonal relationships with co-workers and with people in general.

· Promotes an environment in which the laboratory staff can work together cooperatively toward objectives.

· Capable of performing a variety of tasks within the scope of job duties

Qualifications and Required Skills/Abilities:

· Must be familiar with medical terminology, anatomy and physiology.

· Data entry with transcription abilities in order to assure accurate pathology reports. Must be able to type 45 WPM.

· Working knowledge of office equipment.

· Thorough understanding of office management procedures.

· Excellent organizational and time management skills.

· Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

· Proficiency in MS Office.

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Minimum Skills: Experience with LIS, MS Word, Excel, MS outlook.

Physical Requirements:

Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

Prolonged periods of standing.

Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.

Finger dexterity required.

Hand coordination required.

Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust or focus.

Pay: $24.00 - $26.00 per hour
