Assistant Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

The Atlanta Speech School provides an unmatched opportunity to learn from both peers and experts in the field. Beyond seeking proficiency, we work to construct a Deep Reading Brain for each child. Deep reading requires learning to make connections between what we read to what we think, feel, and do. Founded over 85 years ago, the Atlanta Speech School has evolved into four school divisions, clinical programs, and the Rollins Center for Language & Literacy (our professional development program) with Rollins’ free online Cox Campus. Across all our programs we are committed to equity and driven to ensure that each child can find their voice.  We do this through our mission, to help each person develop their full potential through language and literacy and extend our mission through our vision of literacy and justice for all.

The educational equivalent of a teaching hospital, we lead change through the extension of our work - what occurs in the classroom for each child at the Atlanta Speech School is extended to every child through our free online learning platform, Cox Campus. Cox Campus’ membership is composed of more than 270,000 educators, leaders, healthcare professionals and parents representing all fifty states and 100 countries. 

The School, across all its programs, including the Katherine Hamm Center, attracts a staff of the most gifted and committed teaching professionals who apply the research of the nation’s leading brain development and educational experts to achieve transformational language and literacy outcomes for children – not as an end goal, but as their start to deciding their own future.

Our focus on language and literacy is through the construction of the Deep Reading Brain.  This means that:

Our practices are grounded in structured literacy and built on the sciences of healthy brain development, language acquisition, and the construction of the Deep Reading Brain.  This work is intentionally centered around critical thinking, empathy, problem solving and the development of executive functioning.

Program Information:

The Katherine Hamm Center is a program for individuals from birth through 99 who are deaf/hard of hearing and on the path to literacy through listening and spoken language. Children enrolled in the Katherine Hamm Center have access to all sounds of speech through listening technology such as hearing aids or cochlear implants. The Katherine Hamm Center serves children through its preschool program (14 months-PreK) and through Auditory-Verbal Therapy (children of all ages). The Katherine Hamm Center partners with adults who are post-lingually deafened through Aural Rehabilitation. Auditory-Verbal Therapy and Aural Rehabilitation are offered both in person and virtually.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Katherine Hamm Center Assistant Teacher is an integral part of the development of each child in the classroom. The Assistant Teacher is a conversational partner and a model for language and learning. The Assistant Teacher supports the Lead Teacher throughout daily routines, implements lessons and creates/coordinates materials. This is a 35 hour/week position.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES OF THE JOB:

Being present in the classroom
Following the Teacher’s lesson plan
Being knowledgeable of each student’s goals (e.g., language, speech, auditory, social)
Stimulating the development of each student (e.g., language, speech, auditory, social)
Providing feedback to the Lead Teacher on their observations of students
Assisting students in following programs, strategies, exercises identified/developed and introduced by the Lead Teacher
Assisting with follow-up instruction for small groups or individuals
Helping support large-group instruction as needed
Ensuring a productive auditory environment (e.g., one person is speaking at a time, door is closed, remote microphone technology is utilized)
Assisting in implementation of Lead Teacher’s behavior regulation plan (using the same emphasis and techniques)
Assisting the Lead Teacher in the preparation of materials (e.g., making, gathering, copying teaching materials, preparing classroom/bulletin board displays)
Helping prepare and clean up after activities
Assisting in students’ arrival and departure
Escorting students to places in the building (e.g., bathroom, media center, nurse)
Assuming the activities of the Lead Teacher when the Lead is absent. The substitute will perform the Assistant Teacher’s duties and the Assistant Teacher will assume the Lead Teacher’s role.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor’s Degree (preferably Communication Sciences & Disorders, Special Education, or Education)
Knowledge or experience with child language development
Knowledge or experience with children who are deaf or hard of hearing (preferred)

Among the many programs at the Atlanta Speech School, children and adults with hearing loss and language processing difficulties are served. Therefore, the clarity and accuracy of an applicant’s speech and language may be part of the hiring decision as they relate to performing the essential functions of the position.

BENEFITS:

This 190-day, 35 hour/week school position offers a generous benefit package including health/dental/life/vision and long-term disability insurance; the School subsidizes health insurance premiums of staff and families. SALARY:

Salary is commensurate with experience.
