Education and Experience Requirements:

High School Diploma or G.E.D.
Maryland RVT license
Minimum 3 yrs working as a veterinary assistant in an emergency hospital, specialty practice or 5 years equivalent experience in general practice

Preferred Experience:

Bachelors degree

Physical Requirements:

Can sit, walk, and/or stand for 9 hrs or more a day
Interest and ability to work well in fast-paced environment
Tolerate stress and work well under pressure
Can safely lift minimum of 40 lbs
Ability to work UVC scheduled shifts
Have transportation to punctually arrive to work

Skills and Experience (applicants should be able to perform majority of tasks confidently, accurately, and without guidance)(skills may vary based on RVT certification):

Knowledge of standard medical abbreviations
Able to sedate and/or anesthetize, monitor, and recover patients
Have knowledge of normal vitals (ECG, TPR, BP, CO2, SPO2)
Perform highly diagnostic radiographs using appropriate techniques & positioning to ensure minimizing exposure to radiation.
Perform venipuncture: IVC placement, cephalic, saphenous, intraosseous, and jugular in cats, dogs, exotic (would be a plus)
Have knowledge of medications, uses, and be able to communicate this knowledge to others.
Calculate and recognize correct medication dose ranges, administration methods, safe handling, disposing guidelines, of all medications used in veterinary medicine used in cats, dogs, and exotics (preferred)
Administration of oral, SQ, IM, IV and IO medications, including knowledge of compatibility of various drug combinations in cats, dogs, and exotic species (helpful)
Correctly able to communicate medical conditions with proper medical terminology to veterinarians and coworkers, as well as, relay information to clients
Must have knowledge of appropriate collection methods and test requirements or ability to independently, consistently, and accurately determine diagnostics needs
Accurately and efficiently utilize in-house IDEXX laboratory equipment. Able to trouble shoot laboratory equipment to minimize errors, maximize hospital resources, and maximize efficiency.
Able to confidently read and interpret slide agglutinations, platelet counts, manual CBC, urinalysis, ear cytology, centrifuged fecal analysis.
Understand urgent care illnesses, diagnostic recommendations, treatment options, and outcomes and able to communicate conditions to clients
Must enjoy speaking with clients and providing clients patient updates
Able to review financial estimates with clients
Ability to independently, accurately, and efficiently triage various levels of patients
Obtain and record accurate and thorough patient histories. Ask relevant historical questions to clients regarding patient history.
Correctly obtain patient vital signs: blood pressure (Doppler and oscillometric), ECG, capnography, pulse oximetry, ability to recognize various anesthetic planes and adjust anesthesia accordingly
Perform safe animal restraint utilizing some fear-free techniques and/or sedation
Ability to properly initiate and facilitate basic and advanced life support based on legal standards utilizing RECOVER initiative standards
Assist training externs, interns, and students
Willing and able to consistently document required items in medical records
Ability to perform extensive client communication and documentation of interactions
Assist with creating & review medically complete discharges with clients
Consistently communicate with clients
Ability to perform AFAST and/or TFAST a bonus.
