Job Overview
Responsible for setting up, operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining CNC machine tools to manufacture precision custom components according to customer specifications, engineering drawings, work instructions, and inspection plans. This role requires a strong understanding of machining principles, quality standards, process control, and continuous improvement practices. Must be able to work collaboratively with production, engineering, and quality teams to ensure safe, efficient, and accurate production of custom machined parts. This position combines responsibilities from both intermediate and advanced-level machining roles and includes opportunities for continued technical growth and skill development.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
CNC Setup & Operation
- Set up, operate, and optimize CNC lathes, mills, multi-axis machines, and other CNC equipment to produce custom precision components.
- Perform complete machine setups including tooling, workholding, bar feeders, fixtures, and offsets.
- Produce and inspect first-piece parts to verify compliance with print specifications.
- Monitor machine performance and make necessary adjustments to maintain dimensional accuracy and process capability.
- Change machines and jobs as production requirements dictate.
- Meet established production, efficiency, and quality standards.
Programming & Process Development
- Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, work instructions, and inspection plans.
- Understand CNC programs and machining operations to verify proper part features and sequence of operations.
- Edit, optimize, and troubleshoot CNC programs at the machine.
- Create CNC programs from engineering drawings using conversational programming and/or CAM software when required.
- Assist in developing setup sheets, tooling strategies, and process improvements.
- Utilize macro programming concepts and support advanced programming initiatives.
Quality & Inspection
- Perform in-process and final inspections using precision measuring equipment including micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, height gauges, optical comparators, CMMs, and other inspection tools.
- Apply Statistical Process Control (SPC) techniques to monitor and improve manufacturing processes.
- Collaborate with Quality Assurance and Engineering to investigate and resolve quality concerns.
- Ensure all products meet customer, regulatory, and internal quality requirements.
- Complete inspection records and production documentation accurately and legibly.
Troubleshooting & Continuous Improvement
- Analyze machining challenges and troubleshoot issues related to tooling, machine performance, programs, fixtures, materials, and processes.
- Identify opportunities to improve cycle times, quality, safety, and overall operational efficiency.
- Participate in root cause analysis and corrective action activities.
- Contribute to lean manufacturing, 5S, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Support process validation and new product introduction activities.
Tooling & Maintenance
- Select, install, sharpen, and maintain cutting tools and tooling assemblies.
- Fabricate or modify tooling as needed to support production requirements.
- Perform routine preventive maintenance and daily machine care.
- Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas and equipment.
Teamwork & Safety
- Promote and support a safe, healthy, and environmentally responsible workplace.
- Work effectively with production, engineering, quality, and management teams.
- Train and mentor less experienced machinists as needed.
- Participate in ongoing training, cross-training, and professional development opportunities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong understanding of CNC machining processes and metal-cutting fundamentals.
- Proficiency with Fanuc controls and related control functions.
- Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings and blueprints.
- Strong knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Understanding of cutting tool geometry, speeds, feeds, and material characteristics.
- Proficiency with SPC methods and precision inspection techniques.
- Strong shop mathematics skills, including trigonometry.
- Ability to troubleshoot machining and process issues independently.
- Familiarity with CAD/CAM software preferred.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Frequently lift, push, pull, and move materials weighing up to 40 pounds.
- Ability to perform repetitive tasks and maintain fine motor dexterity.
- Visual acuity sufficient to inspect precision-machined components and read technical documents.
- Ability to maintain focus and concentration in a manufacturing environment.
Pay: $30.00 - $40.00 per hour
