iBRAIN-Academy is one of the largest brain-injury special education programs in the world, headquartered in New York City with current locations in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Washington, D.C. iBRAIN is expanding to add an out-patient clinic (iBRAIN-Center), as well as growing its research efforts for the brain injury and brain-based disorders community (iBRAIN-Institute), collectively iBRAIN. iBRAIN-Academy’s mission is to research, develop, and implement special education and related services for school-aged (3-21 years of age) students who present with a wide range of impairments due to brain injury and/or brain-based disorders as well as the development of a fully-inclusive education model.

Position Title: Associate Special Education Director (ASPED) of Research and Paraprofessional Manger – Full-time position to change the world for the millions of families who deal with brain injury and brain-based disorders.

Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Deputy Director of Research and the Deputy Director of Special Education of iBRAIN, this dual-focus role, the Associate Special Education Director (ASPED) Research and Paraprofessional Manager provides leadership and oversight to Research Associate/Paraprofessionals (RA/Paras) while driving essential research initiatives. By coordinating daily student support, the Manager ensures that Individualized Education Plan (IEP) goals are properly implemented and that students receive safe, effective care throughout the day. Additionally, this position collaborates with an interdisciplinary research team to gather and analyze robust data that underpins innovative intervention strategies. Through ongoing supervision, training, and performance management of RA/Paras, the ASPED Research and Paraprofessional Manager fosters professional growth, maintains high-quality academic and therapeutic standards, and contributes to advancing the field of special education and brain injury research.

Reports to: You will report jointly to the Deputy Director of Special Education (for paraprofessional and student-related responsibilities) and the Deputy Director of Research (for research oversight), ensuring seamless integration of educational and scientific objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

Research Asssistant/Paraprofessional (RA/Para) Management

Supervise and mentor RA/Paras working across interdisciplinary teams (special educators, therapists, nurses, and other specialists).

Oversee day-to-day paraprofessional duties, ensuring students are safely repositioned, transferred, and supported throughout academic and therapy sessions.

Maintain quality and competency of RA/Paras by providing ongoing feedback, training, and performance evaluations.

Coordinate with the multidisciplinary team to ensure students’ IEP goals are effectively met and properly documented.

Utilize project management tools including excel to track tasks, deadlines, and data integrity.

Ensure compliance with institutional, local, and federal regulations related to student care and research activities.

Research Coordination & Data Management

Collaborate closely with the Deputy Director of Research to design and implement project plans, timelines, and milestones for RA/Paras.

Guide RA/Paras in data collection and documentation, ensuring adherence to all Institutional Review Board (IRB) guidelines and human-subject protections.

Serve as a liaison between RA/Paras and research leadership, facilitating the dissemination of relevant research findings and best practices.

Provide input on research design and assist in writing and publishing original research and case study reports in peer-reviewed journals.

Team Development & Collaboration

Participate in the interviewing, orientation, and training of new RA/Paras, focusing on both educational and research skillsets.

Promote collaboration and communication among RA/Paras, program staff, and the research team to ensure optimal student outcomes.

Maintain regular group meetings and internal seminars to share progress, troubleshoot challenges, and support professional development for RA/Paras.

Encourage an environment of innovation and continuous improvement, fostering teamwork and accountability.

Contribute to creating a culture of respect, empathy, and humor to support the wellbeing and morale of staff and students.

Perform other responsibilities as assigned to support the broader mission of iBRAIN.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

o Required: Master’s degree in Psychology, Life Science, Neuroscience, Special Education, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy or a related field.

o Preferred: PhD, EdD or similar doctorate degree in related field.

Experience:

o At least 3 years of relevant management experience

o Research coordination experience preferred

o Previous work with individuals with special needs preferred.

Skills:

o Excellent communication and organizational abilities.

o Proven capability in scientific and technical writing.

o Strong leadership style that fosters quality output and excellent team relationships.

o Detail-oriented, with the ability to multitask effectively in a fast-paced environment.

o Must be able to pass ALL the FREE e learning Short Courses in Clinical Research from The Global Health Training Centre website (https://globalhealthtrainingcentre.tghn.org/elearning/short-courses/)

o Demonstrated experience in data management with a variety of data sources (survey, administrative, and medical data).

o Knowledge of statistical software (SPSS or other) and experience with descriptive statistical analysis.

o MUST HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOR

o Fluency in Spanish is a plus
