Full Job Description

Job Summary

We are seeking an energetic and dedicated Competitive Math Coach to inspire and guide elementary school students in developing their mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills. This part-time, in-person role is based in Gatos and requires commitment on Fridays at 5.30 PM. As a key facilitator of math enrichment, you will create engaging learning experiences that foster confidence, curiosity, and a love for mathematics. Your expertise will help cultivate a positive classroom environment where young learners thrive and excel.

Position Details

Schedule: Every Friday, 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM (90 minutes)
Duration: August 28 – November 13, 2026 (12 weeks, full commitment required)
Location: Los Gatos, CA (in-person only — not virtual)
Class Size: Small group, 4–10 students, Grades 3-5
Compensation: $40–$50/hr depending on experience
What You'll Do
Lead weekly 90-minute in-person coaching sessions for a small group of motivated elementary and middle school students
Teach creative problem-solving strategies using olympiad-style problems: number sense, logic, combinatorics, geometry, and algebraic thinking
Present multiple solution methods for each problem — encouraging students to think flexibly
Build a supportive, engaging environment where young learners feel safe to struggle, experiment, and grow
Track student progress and adjust instruction to meet varying skill levels within the group
Who You AreRequired:
Strong math background; bachelor's degree in Math, Education, Engineering, or related field
Experience teaching or tutoring elementary and middle school students (grades 4–8)
Comfortable leading a group (not just 1-on-1 tutoring)
Ability to commit to all 12 Friday sessions from August 28 through November 13 without exception
Available for an in-person interview and teaching demonstration in Los Gatos

Strongly Preferred:

Teaching experience at an established math enrichment program
Competition math experience — as a student, coach, or tutor
Familiarity with elementary and middle school math olympiad problem types and contest formats
Ability to teach non-routine problems using multiple solution strategies
Training in structured math methodologies that emphasize conceptual understanding and problem solving

Interview Process

All candidates will go through an in-person interview that includes:

A brief conversation about your math teaching background and approach
A short, informal teaching demonstration: we'll give you a fun math problem and ask you to walk us through how you'd teach it to a 5th grader. No prep needed.
Discussion of how you handle mixed skill levels, student engagement, and problem-solving strategies

We value how you teach over what you know. We're looking for someone who guides students to discover solutions, be enthused about math and not someone who lectures answers.

Pay: $40.00 - $50.00 per hour
