Full Job Description

The Human Exploitation and Resilience Program (HERP) at the New York University Marron Institute of Urban Management invites applications for a Research Scholar, working with Clinical Associate Professor Meredith Dank.

About the Human Exploitation and Resilience Program:

Led by Dr. Meredith Dank, HERP research primarily focuses on both US-based and international forced labor and human trafficking, in addition to other types of gender based violence. The program works with many government and nongovernment programmatic partners, including grassroots organizations to translate research into action by delivering evidence-based interventions, informing policy and amplifying survivor-centered approaches.

The Research Scholar will work on several projects in the HERP portfolio. The scope of the research will include assisting with currently funded research projects through the Human Exploitation and Resilience program, specifically quantitative and monitoring and evaluation analyses on a wide range of studies.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Research management (10%)

Early stage: Help design project methodologies, organize grant proposal tasks, construct data collection tools, and design data monitoring procedures.

Middle stage: Work with data collection teams to adapt data evaluation and monitoring systems to local needs. Conduct routine data quality checks.

Late stage: Organize endline report writing amongst full research teams, conduct final quantitative analyses, and contribute to final qualitative analyses.

Quantitative data analysis (30%)

Conduct quantitative analyses, including, but not limited to: data cleaning, missing data analysis, multilevel regression modeling, survival analyses, data visualization, and spatial modeling.

Monitoring, evaluation, and data systems management (30%)

Conduct ongoing data monitoring and analyses of collected data to assess data quality and identify gaps

Develop instruments to collect data needed by field teams.

Implement measures to improve data quality and strengthen data collection processes.

Design, adapt, and maintain digital data collection tools and back-end architecture for end-to-end M&E systems

Aggregate and synthesize data for programmatic reporting, including preparing datasets and summaries for donor reporting and internal learning.

Grant proposal writing (10%)

Contributing to grant proposal writing for both government and foundation funders. This will involve contributing to project design, literature reviews, analytic procedures, and helping to organize writing tasks for team members.

Academic manuscript writing (10%)

Contribute to academic manuscripts for journal publication, including conducting analyses, writing papers, and reviewing papers.

Dissemination of project findings to a variety of audiences (10%)

Develop deliverables with project results for a variety of audiences, including infographics for public use, briefs for practitioner use, and manuscripts for academic use

Required Skills and Competencies:

Technical: Experience conducting moderate to complex quantitative analyses with a proficiency in either R or Python.

Previous academic and grant writing experience

Highly detail oriented with strong organizational skills

Experience with end-to-end data management systems

Communication: Experience working with a variety of stakeholders, including funders, government agencies, NGOs, researchers, practitioners, etc.

Ability to work independently and meet deadlines

Minimum of a master’s degree in criminal justice, public health, sociology, social work, international development or an equivalent social science required.

The successful candidate will be exposed to a range of research projects as part of a diverse team of research scientists, postdoctoral associates, graduate students, and industry and agency partners. The projects are intended to be both impactful and advance research on forced labor, human trafficking, gender based violance and justice system inequality.

This is a hybrid working position. US based remote work is possible.

The salary range for this position will be $85,000 - $95,000 annually.
