Software Development Engineer (Contract)
Please note that this is a contract role providing services to Microsoft through external staffing partners of Allegis Global Solutions. If you are selected for this role, you will be employed by AGS and will not be an employee of Microsoft.
Summary:
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated software engineer to join a team focused on transforming industrial controls data into standardized, cloud-ready telemetry that powers automation, reporting, and predictive analytics for partner teams. In a typical day, you will build and maintain C#/.NET automation tooling for a telemetry onboarding workflow — extending console apps and Worker Services that convert device templates into the CSV and configuration outputs the pipeline depends on. A core focus is applied machine learning: training and refining a classification model that predicts which telemetry tag maps to which template field, using years of historical taglists so automation can generate near-complete templates with minimal human cleanup. You will own the full development lifecycle — from requirements gathering through delivery — working across Azure IoT, Event Hub, and Kusto/KQL to validate clean, correctly mapped data. You will also contribute to the team's AI-enablement direction using Copilot and agent patterns, document your work thoroughly, and mentor teammates to keep everything maintainable on a unified C#/.NET stack.
Job Responsibilities:
Design, develop, test, and deliver C#/.NET console applications and Worker Services that convert Excel-based device templates into CSV and configuration outputs for the telemetry pipeline
Train, evaluate, and continuously refine a machine learning classification model that maps telemetry tags to template fields using historical taglist data
Perform feature engineering on messy historical taglists and assess model accuracy to drive automation quality improvements
Validate telemetry data end-to-end using Azure IoT, Event Hub, and Kusto/KQL to ensure data is clean and correctly mapped
Maintain and enhance legacy systems while modernizing industrial controls and telemetry data processes
Contribute to the team's AI-enablement direction, including Copilot and MCP-style agent patterns
Own the full software development lifecycle: requirements gathering, functional specification authoring, development, testing, and delivery
Troubleshoot and resolve pipeline and tooling issues independently rather than escalating or handing off
Document all work thoroughly to ensure maintainability and knowledge transfer across the team
Mentor teammates and promote consistent use of the team's single C#/.NET stack
Collaborate with cross-functional partner teams to understand data consumption needs and align tooling outputs accordingly
Identify and implement process improvements that increase efficiency and reduce manual effort in the telemetry onboarding workflow
Requirements:
5 or more years of professional C#/.NET software development experience building and shipping production tooling
3 or more years of applied machine learning or classification model development experience
3 or more years of hands-on experience with Azure data-plane and telemetry technologies including Azure IoT, Event Hub, and Kusto/KQL
Demonstrated experience with process improvement and automation in an engineering context
Experience working with industrial controls data or similar operational technology environments is strongly preferred
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related field required
Citizenship attestation with an active U.S. passport required
Cloud attestation required
Deep proficiency in C# and .NET (ideally .NET 10) including Visual Studio and production-ready coding practices
Hands-on experience building and deploying text or tabular classification models using ML.NET, scikit-learn, or embedding-based approaches
Practical fluency with Azure IoT Hub, Azure Event Hub, and Kusto/KQL for telemetry validation and data-plane engineering
Python prototyping skills for machine learning experimentation prior to porting logic into C#
Strong understanding of the full software development lifecycle from analysis and requirements through testing and delivery
Experience with industrial control systems and telemetry data pipelines
Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and drive tasks to completion without close supervision
Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to document technical work clearly
Problem-solving mindset with a demonstrated willingness to challenge and improve existing processes
Mentoring skills sufficient to provide constructive feedback and support teammates' technical growth
Familiarity with AI-enablement patterns including Copilot integration and agent-style architectures
Knowledge of database management, SQL, and data description practices
