Full Job Description

Job Summary:

The Nephrology Physician Assistant (PA) provides high-quality, specialized care to patients with kidney diseases in various healthcare settings, including outpatient clinics, hospitals, and dialysis units. The PA will collaborate closely with nephrologists, healthcare teams, and other medical professionals to manage the care of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), acute kidney injury (AKI), end-stage renal disease (ESRD), and other renal-related conditions.

Key Responsibilities:1. Clinical Duties (Outpatient/Clinic):

Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, including history taking, physical examinations, and ordering diagnostic tests related to nephrology conditions.
Manage patients with CKD, hypertension, electrolyte imbalances, and related comorbidities under the supervision of a nephrologist.
Educate patients and families about kidney disease management, treatment options, medications, and lifestyle changes.
Monitor laboratory results and adjust treatment plans as necessary to manage disease progression.
Prescribe medications, order therapies, and provide referrals as appropriate.
Participate in the management of patients preparing for or already receiving renal replacement therapies such as dialysis or kidney transplantation.

2. Hospital Rounding:

Provide inpatient care for patients with kidney-related conditions, including those admitted for acute renal issues, dialysis, or other nephrology-related concerns.
Perform daily hospital rounds, assess patient progress, and modify treatment plans based on clinical findings and nephrology-specific needs.
Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams (including hospitalists, nurses, and specialists) to ensure continuity of care.
Manage complications related to kidney diseases, including fluid and electrolyte disorders, AKI, and progression of CKD.
Document clinical assessments, treatment plans, and progress in the electronic medical record (EMR).

3. Dialysis Rounding (In-Center/Outpatient Dialysis Units):

Perform regular dialysis rounds to assess patients undergoing hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis.
Monitor dialysis treatment effectiveness, review lab results, and adjust treatment prescriptions based on clinical indicators and nephrologist input.
Assess vascular access sites for signs of infection, clotting, or other complications.
Educate patients on proper dialysis techniques, diet, medication adherence, and fluid restrictions.
Collaborate with dialysis unit staff to ensure patient safety and optimal outcomes.

4. Administrative and Miscellaneous Duties:

Participate in quality improvement initiatives and research projects aimed at improving patient outcomes in nephrology.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of nephrology-related medical advances, clinical guidelines, and best practices through continuing education.
Assist in the coordination of care between the nephrology team, primary care providers, and other specialists.
Document all patient interactions, treatments, and medical decisions in accordance with legal and regulatory standards.
Attend regular meetings and case conferences with nephrologists and other healthcare professionals.

Qualifications:

Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant Studies from an accredited program.
Current Physician Assistant Certification (PA-C) from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
State licensure as a Physician Assistant (or eligibility for licensure).
BLS and ACLS certifications (required).
1-3 years of experience in nephrology or a related field preferred (but not required).

Skills and Abilities:

Strong clinical skills in the management of nephrology-related conditions, including CKD, ESRD, and dialysis.
Ability to work in a variety of settings, including outpatient clinics, hospitals, and dialysis units.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams.
Ability to work independently while also taking direction from supervising nephrologists.
Proficiency in EMR systems and medical documentation.

Work Environment:

Split time between outpatient nephrology clinic, hospital, and dialysis units.
May require working weekends, holidays, or being on-call for emergency consultations or dialysis patients.
