MEP Department Manager (Electrical & MEP)

About the Role

SJ & Construction is looking for a hands-on Bi-Lingual MEP Department Manager to lead all electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and equipment installation work across our active construction projects. This is a combined office and field role — you'll manage electrical crews and MEP subcontractors in the field while supporting the Project Manager with estimating, submittals, and job costing. If you have deep electrical construction knowledge, can read single-line diagrams and equipment drawings, and are comfortable enforcing NEC and NFPA 70E standards on site every day, this role was built for you.

ResponsibilitiesA. Electrical & Equipment Field Management

Manage all electrical work and equipment installation performed by SJ Construction's own crew and subcontracted trades on every active project.

Review electrical drawings, single-line diagrams, panel schedules, and equipment drawings daily; verify installations conform to approved drawings and NEC requirements at each phase.

Identify field conflicts immediately; write formal RFIs and submit to PM same day — do not allow work to proceed on unresolved conflicts.

Coordinate AHJ inspections for each electrical phase; authorize energization only after AHJ sign-off and PM approval.

Verify equipment setting per manufacturer specs — anchor bolts, grouting, leveling, shaft alignment, and all utility connections (power, control wiring, water, gas, compressed air, drain).

Coordinate factory startup technician visits; verify pre-startup checklist completion before any equipment is powered on; document commissioning results and deliver O&M package to PM at closeout.

Coordinate electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and fire protection trades to prevent installation conflicts; maintain NEC Article 110 equipment clearances.

B. Project & Estimating Support

Assist PM with electrical and equipment scope takeoffs, bid packages, and subcontractor bid evaluation.

Manage all electrical and equipment submittals — log, track, and follow up in Contractor Foreman; verify no material is ordered or installed until the submittal is approved.

Track all electrical, MEP, and equipment POs, invoices, and pay apps in the Job Costing Report; flag cost overruns weekly.

Prepare weekly Electrical & Equipment Progress Report to PM — % complete by system, open RFIs, and submittal status.

Assist PM with change order preparation — document scope, cost, and schedule impact.

C. Field & Site Support

Support Site Superintendent with daily field operations; cover all Superintendent duties when absent.

Direct field crew and subcontractors under PM and Superintendent direction; enforce schedule and quality standards.

Submit Daily Work Report to PM by 5:00 PM — headcount, phase progress, equipment status, and issues.

Coordinate material and equipment deliveries with Purchasing; confirm receipt and forward packing slips.

Prepare punch list for electrical, MEP, and equipment scopes at completion; coordinate walkthrough with PM and owner.

Pay: $50,000.00 - $80,000.00 per year
