Job Purpose
The Lighting Director provides the creative, technical, and operational leadership
for all lighting systems and productions at Preston Productions. This position is
responsible for the design, programming, implementation, operation, and
maintenance of lighting systems for concerts, corporate events, theatre, and other
live productions. The Lighting Director exercises independent judgment and
discretion in developing lighting concepts, managing projects, supervising staff,
and ensuring lighting systems are safely and effectively executed to support the
overall artistic vision and client expectations.
Essential Functions of the Job
● Design creative lighting concepts and develop lighting plots, paperwork, and
technical documentation using Vectorworks and Lightwright.
● Program, configure, and operate lighting control systems, including ETC
Eos consoles, to achieve the desired production design and execution.
● Oversee the installation, focus, operation, troubleshooting, and strike of
lighting systems for live events and productions.
● Manage lighting projects from initial planning and equipment preparation
through live event execution and post-event teardown.
● Supervise, train, schedule, and direct lighting technicians, electricians, and
stagehands while promoting a safe and professional work environment.
● Assign work priorities and monitor project progress to ensure deadlines and
production requirements are met.
● Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and coordinate repairs for intelligent lighting
fixtures, LED fixtures, dimming systems, consoles, networking equipment,
and related lighting equipment.
● Ensure lighting equipment is properly maintained, organized, and prepared
for upcoming productions.
● Collaborate with production management and other technical departments
to coordinate lighting requirements and support overall event success.
● Exercise independent judgment in resolving technical challenges and
making creative and operational decisions during planning and live event
execution.
● Ensure compliance with company safety policies, industry standards, and
applicable regulations during all phases of production.
● Maintain current knowledge of lighting technologies, software, and industry
best practices to continuously improve production quality and operational
efficiency.
Additional Duties
● Perform additional related duties as assigned.
● Assist with equipment inventory, shop organization, equipment testing, and
special production projects as needed.
● Support the development and implementation of departmental procedures
and operational improvements.
Qualifications
● High school diploma or equivalent required; post-secondary education in
Theatre Production, Entertainment Technology, Lighting Design, or a related
field is preferred.
● Minimum of four (4) years of professional experience as a Lighting Director,
Lighting Programmer, Master Electrician, or in a comparable lighting
leadership role within live events, broadcast, or theatrical productions.
● Advanced proficiency with Vectorworks, Lightwright, and ETC Eos lighting
control systems.
● Strong knowledge of intelligent lighting fixtures, LED systems, dimming
systems, networking, power distribution, and entertainment lighting
practices.
● Demonstrated leadership, project management, and team supervision skills.
● Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving abilities.
● Ability to work independently while managing multiple projects and changing
priorities.
● Willingness to travel and work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends,
holidays, and extended hours as production schedules require.
Work Conditions (with or without reasonable accommodation):
● Must be able to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather and
environmental conditions.
● Frequently stand and walk for extended periods during productions and
event setup.
● Frequently lift, carry, push, pull, and move lighting equipment and materials
weighing up to 50 pounds.
● Regularly bend, kneel, crouch, climb ladders, work at elevated heights, and
work in confined spaces.
● Frequently use hands and fingers to operate lighting consoles, computers,
tools, and technical equipment.
● Must possess sufficient visual acuity and color perception to design,
program, and operate lighting systems.
● Must possess sufficient hearing to communicate effectively in high-noise
production environments.
● Ability to travel and work nontraditional schedules, including nights,
weekends, holidays, and extended shifts as business needs require.
