Patent Prosecution Associate – Mechanical/Biomedical Engineering

Rochester/Western NY or Albany (In-Office)

Heslin Rothenberg Farley & Mesiti P.C. (HRFM) is a boutique intellectual property law firm with a long-established practice focused exclusively on intellectual property matters. Our attorneys and patent professionals work closely with clients ranging from startups to multinational companies, providing practical, business-focused IP counsel across a wide range of technologies. We pride ourselves on a collaborative culture, technical excellence, and meaningful client relationships.

We are seeking an Associate Attorney or Patent Agent to join our intellectual property practice in our Rochester or Albany office. This is an in-office position offering hands-on responsibility and direct interaction with inventors and clients, particularly in the mechanical and biomedical engineering technology areas.

Qualifications:

3–4 years of substantive patent prosecution experience
Strong technical background in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related field
Admission to the USPTO (Patent Bar required)
Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
Admission to at least one U.S. state bar
Experience drafting and prosecuting U.S. and foreign patent applications
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work independently while contributing to a team-oriented practice

Responsibilities:

Draft and prosecute U.S. and foreign patent applications in mechanical and biomedical technologies
Prepare Office Action responses and conduct examiner interviews for patent applications
Directly advise clients on patentability and prosecution strategy
Manage patent portfolios and related deadlines with direct communication with clients
Communicate directly with clients, inventors, and foreign associates related to client patent portfolio management
