Direct Support Professional (DSP) — Independent Living Services

About Thrive Pathways

Thrive Pathways (TP) is a licensed provider of Independent Living Services (ILS) serving adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) in the Inland Empire area catchment area. Our mission is to empower individuals to live as independently as possible within their communities. Using a Coach-Approach model, our team delivers personalized, strengths-based training in real-world settings — at home and in the community — to help each person reach their fullest potential.

Position Summary

As a Direct Support Professional (DSP), you will provide individualized coaching, training, and support to adults with IDD in alignment with each person's Individual Program Plan (IPP) and the service components outlined under California Title 17 of the Code of Regulations. You will work one-on-one with individuals in their homes and natural community environments, helping them build skills and confidence across daily living, health, safety, social integration, and self-advocacy domains.

This role is ideal for compassionate, patient individuals who are committed to promoting autonomy, dignity, and community inclusion for people with disabilities.

Key Responsibilities

Daily Living & Personal Care

Train and support individuals in personal hygiene and self-care routines (bathing, grooming, dressing) using a coaching model that promotes independence.
Assist with medication management and train individuals to follow their doctor's instructions and healthcare directives.
Coach individuals in meal planning, healthy food selection, safe food handling, and nutritious meal preparation on a budget.
Provide training in household management including cleaning, laundry, home safety, and coordinating IHSS services.

Health & Medical Coordination

Support individuals in understanding their health needs and navigating medical and dental services.
Train individuals to schedule appointments, communicate with healthcare providers, and follow through on medical directives.
Promote the six pillars of health: nutrition, sleep, exercise, stress resilience, positive social connections, and avoidance of risky substances.

Financial & Life Management

Teach money management skills including budgeting, differentiating needs vs. wants, check cashing, ATM use, and timely bill payment.
Assist individuals in establishing or maintaining bank accounts and building financial literacy.

Community Integration & Transportation

Train individuals to safely use public transportation, including reading bus schedules, purchasing passes, and navigating routes relevant to their daily life.
Support individuals in accessing and using community resources including libraries, post offices, laundromats, parks, grocery stores, and public health services.
Assist individuals in applying for Dial-A-Ride or other paratransit programs where applicable.

Social Skills, Safety & Self-Advocacy

Teach and reinforce social skills including greetings, active listening, conflict resolution, personal boundaries, and friendship skills through role-play and real-world practice.
Train individuals in personal safety, home safety, street safety, emergency procedures (fire, earthquake, 911), online safety, and medication safety.
Coach individuals on self-advocacy — communicating needs, asking questions at IPP meetings, and interacting effectively with Regional Centre representatives and other service providers.
Support individuals in developing interpersonal relationships beyond paid staff, including community clubs, faith-based activities, and recreational groups.

Documentation & Compliance

Maintain accurate, timely progress notes and service logs in accordance with Title 17 CCR documentation requirements.
Implement services consistent with each individual's IPP goals and TP's Program Implementation Manual.
Uphold the rights of individuals as defined under Title 17 CCR, including dignity, privacy, confidentiality, and freedom from abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
Fulfill mandated reporter obligations and immediately report any suspected abuse, neglect, or exploitation per the Lanterman Act and applicable California law.
Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and required in-service education.

Qualifications

Required

High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Must be at least 18 years of age Male.
Valid California driver's license and reliable transportation (preferred; may vary by assignment).
Ability to pass a DOJ/FBI background check (criminal history clearance required per Title 17 CCR).
Current CPR and First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain within 30 days of hire.
Negative TB test or chest X-ray clearance.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a genuine commitment to supporting people with IDD.
Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends depending on individual needs.

Preferred

1+ year of experience working with individuals with IDD, autism spectrum disorder, or related disabilities.
Bilingual candidates are strongly encouraged to apply — bilingual pay differential may apply.
Familiarity with Regional Centre services, the Lanterman Act, or Title 17 CCR.
Experience with Coach-Approach, person-cantered planning, or positive behaviour support.

Work Environment & Schedule

Services are delivered in the individual's home and community settings within the Harbor regional centre catchment area. Schedules are individualized to match the needs and preferences of each person served, typically ranging from 3–6 sessions per week of 1–2 hours each. Evening and weekend availability is a plus.

All DSP staff are required to adhere to the rights of persons with developmental disabilities, mandated reporting laws, HIPAA confidentiality requirements, and Regional Centre documentation standards.
