Position Summary
The Pharmacy Operations Supervisor - 2nd Shift is responsible for overseeing daily pharmacy operations during the evening shift to ensure safe, accurate, compliant, and efficient workflow. This role supervises pharmacy technicians, support staff, and operational processes related to prescription fulfillment, inventory, order processing, packaging, shipping, quality assurance, and customer or patient support functions.
The Operations Supervisor helps maintain productivity standards, supports regulatory compliance, resolves workflow issues, coaches team members, and ensures that all work is completed according to company policies, pharmacy procedures, and applicable state and federal regulations. This position works closely with pharmacists, pharmacy leadership, and cross-functional teams to support high-quality pharmacy service.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Operations Supervision
· Supervise 2nd shift pharmacy operations, including prescription processing, filling, packaging, staging, shipping, inventory movement, and other assigned workflow areas.
· Monitor daily workload and staffing levels to ensure production goals, service levels, and turnaround times are met.
· Assign work, prioritize tasks, and adjust staffing as needed to maintain efficient shift operations.
· Identify operational delays, workflow bottlenecks, and process issues; escalate concerns to pharmacy leadership when appropriate.
· Ensure shift handoffs are completed accurately and that communication between shifts is clear and timely.
Team Leadership
· Lead, coach, and support pharmacy technicians and operational staff during the assigned shift.
· Provide on-the-floor guidance, training reinforcement, and performance feedback.
· Promote a professional, accountable, and team-oriented work environment.
· Assist with onboarding and training of new employees.
· Monitor attendance, productivity, quality, and adherence to procedures.
· Report performance concerns, policy violations, or employee relations issues to management.
Quality and Compliance
· Ensure all team members follow company policies, standard operating procedures, safety requirements, HIPAA guidelines, and applicable pharmacy regulations.
· Support quality assurance activities, including accuracy checks, documentation review, error prevention, and process audits.
· Ensure pharmacy operations are performed under the appropriate supervision of licensed pharmacists.
· Prevent unauthorized activities and ensure staff do not perform pharmacist-only duties unless properly licensed and authorized.
· Document operational issues, incidents, discrepancies, and corrective actions as required.
· Maintain a clean, organized, secure, and inspection-ready work environment.
Inventory and Workflow Support
· Oversee inventory handling, restocking, cycle counts, returns, expired product management, and controlled substance procedures where applicable.
· Ensure proper storage, labeling, handling, and security of medications and supplies.
· Monitor supply levels and communicate inventory needs to appropriate personnel.
· Assist with resolving order exceptions, missing items, rejected claims, shipping delays, or fulfillment issues.
Communication and Problem Solving
· Serve as the primary operational point of contact for 2nd shift staff.
· Communicate effectively with pharmacists, managers, customer service teams, warehouse teams, delivery partners, and other departments.
· Escalate urgent patient, prescription, safety, staffing, or compliance issues promptly.
· Participate in shift meetings, operational updates, and continuous improvement initiatives.
· Support implementation of new processes, systems, policies, and workflow changes.
Safety and Security
· Enforce workplace safety standards, including proper lifting, equipment use, spill response, and incident reporting.
· Ensure medications, patient information, and pharmacy systems are secured according to company and regulatory standards.
· Report equipment issues, safety hazards, security concerns, or facility problems immediately.
Required Qualifications
· High school diploma or equivalent required.
· Minimum of [2-4] years of pharmacy operations, pharmacy technician, healthcare fulfillment, or related operational experience.
· Minimum of [1-2] years of supervisory, lead, or team leadership experience preferred.
· Active Pharmacy Technician license or registration or National Pharmacy Technician Certification, such as CPhT
· Knowledge of pharmacy workflow, prescription fulfillment, inventory processes, and regulatory requirements.
· Ability to work 2nd shift, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.
· Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy, quality, and patient safety.
· Ability to lead teams in a fast-paced, production-focused environment.
· Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
· Basic computer skills and ability to use pharmacy management systems, inventory systems, Microsoft Office, and other operational tools.
Preferred Qualifications
· Experience in a retail, mail-order, specialty, long-term care, central fill, hospital, or closed-door pharmacy environment.
· Experience supervising pharmacy technicians or production teams.
· Knowledge of HIPAA, DEA, OSHA, state board of pharmacy requirements, and controlled substance procedures.
· Lean, Six Sigma, process improvement, or quality assurance experience.

· Ability to work in a pharmacy, warehouse, fulfillment, or production environment.
· Ability to use computers, scanners, printers, packaging equipment, carts, and other pharmacy-related equipment.
· Must be able to follow safety procedures and wear required personal protective equipment when applicable.
Working Conditions
· Work is performed in a pharmacy operations, fulfillment, production, or warehouse-style environment.
· Evening shift work may require limited management coverage, requiring strong independent judgment.
· May involve exposure to medications, packaging materials, automated equipment, noise, temperature-controlled areas, and time-sensitive production demands.
· Must comply with all company policies, pharmacy regulations, confidentiality requirements, and safety standards.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position supervises pharmacy technicians, fulfillment associates, inventory staff, data entry staff, shipping staff, and/or other assigned 2nd shift personnel. Responsibilities may include work assignment, training, coaching, productivity monitoring, quality review, issue escalation, and support of performance management processes.
