Outreach/ Prevention Educator

Reports to: Prevention Coordinator

Department: Crisis Services

Supervises: N/A

Employment Status: Full-Time

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Position Summary

Servicing Lee and Whiteside counties, the Outreach/Prevention Educator works as a member of the Crisis Services Program to provide victim-centered education for the community. They are responsible for assisting with the organization and implementation of community education programs for clients of all ages. The position also provides crisis intervention, information and support to sexual assault and domestic violence survivors during medical treatment and law enforcement processes. The positions arrange and provides professional trainings, answers the hotline, assists walk-ins, and volunteer recruitment. This position requires the use of independent judgement in all service-related responsibilities. They will maintain the highest degree of confidentiality associated with performing the duties of this function. The Outreach/Prevention Educator will also maintain, at all times, a commitment to quality client service on behalf of the YWCA Sauk Valley. The Outreach/Prevention Educator is not a lawyer or medical professional and does not provide legal or medical advice to clients.

Primary Job Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Documents all program and community contacts as necessary;
During interactions with clients, remains alert to recognize the signs and symptoms of physical, sexual and emotional child abuse and respond in accordance with Mandated Reporter Guidelines;
Recruits, trains, and schedules volunteer advocates in Crisis Services Program;
Assist with maintaining volunteer files;
Represents YWCA and Crisis Services Programs as necessary;
Provides Crisis Services Program services outreach to area organizations;
Develops resources for use in community prevention education programs;
Assists with Crisis Services Program fundraising;
Publicizes Crisis Services prevention program, in consultation with Prevention Coordinator;
Develops articles for publication in media coverage, in conjunction with program staff.
Assists with the research and development of prevention education programs;
Initiates contact with potential groups who may need prevention education;
Develops and implements professional trainings for law enforcement, schools, state’s attorneys, and medical and social services providers, in conjunction with program staff regarding victims’ rights, Domestic Violence Act, Sexual Assault, and availability of program services;
Presents to community organizations to build community awareness and to provide education regarding domestic violence and sexual assault and the availability program services;
Recruit volunteers for Crisis Services
Assists with program spending, monitoring funding, and ordering supplies;
Some local and national travel may be required.
Answers crisis hotline, support, information, referral and assistance as needed;
Assists walk-in clients as needed and completes required intake processes;
Participate in on-call, holiday, program coverage rotation;
Organizes staff and volunteer in-services addressing issues related to sexual violence, domestic violence, and client support no less than on a quarterly basis;
Provides emotional support and crisis intervention for clients as needed through trauma-informed interactions with them.
Assists with the research and development of prevention education programs;
Initiates contact with potential groups who may need prevention education;
Develops and implements professional trainings for law enforcement, schools, state’s attorneys, and medical and social services providers, in conjunction with program staff.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

· Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with community organizations;

· Serves as a Mandated Reporter; Reports suspected cases of child abuse as required under the Abused, Neglected Child Reporting Act;

· Successful completion of 80 hours of mandatory in-house domestic violence and sexual assault training;

· Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

· Minimum of 3 years of comparable work experience. Some college preferred.

· Ability to assess levels of emotional distress in children and adults and respond accordingly;

· Excellent organizational skills;

· Excellent oral and written communications skills;

· Ability to take initiative and work independently and as part of a team;

· Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships both internally and externally;

· Availability to work some evenings and weekends;

· A working telephone;

· Access to reliable transportation;

· A desire for continual personal and professional growth and development;

· Commitment to and support of the YWCA Mission.

Physical & Mental Demands:

The position requires sitting, standing, stooping, bending, walking, climbing, speaking and driving. The functions of this position are varied in nature and require the ability to make clear and concise decisions and to respond in an effective and appropriate manner during crisis.
