Job Summary
The Asphalt Estimator / Project Manager is responsible for bidding, planning, executing, and finalizing asphalt construction projects. This role involves managing project resources, schedules, budgets, and ensuring quality control throughout the construction process.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1. Estimating
- Prepare detailed cost estimates by analyzing plans and specifications and performing quantity take-offs for DOT projects.
- Utilize estimating software and tools to ensure precision and efficiency in cost calculations.
2. Project Planning:
- Collaborate with clients and stakeholders to define project scope, goals, and deliverables.
- Develop comprehensive project plans, including schedules, budgets, and resource allocation.
3. Resource Management:
- Select and manage subcontractors and construction crews.
- Procure necessary materials and equipment.
- Ensure adequate staffing levels for each phase of the project.
4. Budget and Cost Control
- Monitor project budgets and expenses.
- Implement cost-saving measures when possible.
- Prepare and submit accurate cost estimates to clients.
5. Quality/Safety Compliance
- Ensure the highest standards of quality and safety are maintained on all projects.
6. Project Execution:
- Lead and motivate project teams, including field crews and subcontractors, to achieve project goals.
- Resolve project-related issues and conflicts.
7. Client Communication/Relations
- Serve as primary point of contact for clients.
- Provide regular project updates and address client concerns or requests.
- Build and maintain a strong relationship with DOT and municipal clients, ensuring customer satisfaction and repeat business.
8. Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain detailed project records, including progress reports, change orders, and correspondence.
- Generate project status reports.
9. Risk Management
- Identify potential project risks.
- Monitor and manage project risks throughout the construction process.
10. Project Completion
- Ensure all project milestones are met.
- Conduct final inspections and ensure client acceptance of completed work.
- Close out the project, including financial reconciliation and documentation.
Required Skills/Abilities/ Qualifications:
- Proficiency in project management software and bidding software. Heavy Job, Heavy Bid, and Blue Beam knowledge are a plus.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
- Energetic and highly motivated with a strong sense of urgency.
- Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices in construction.
- Highly entrepreneurial and self-motivated, with the ability to work equally well on own as well as in a team environment.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Demonstrate attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
- Exhibit strong oral and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Work well under pressure, independently, and in a team.
- Collaborate effectively with various departmental managerial staff.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- 5+years experience in DOT construction project management. (Projects between $1mil to 10 mil) (Required)
- Strong Knowledge of road construction techniques and materials.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, with an adaptable and flexible style in working with all types of individuals.
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Ability to navigate various job site locations and settings of the company.
- Ability to lift 30-40 lbs.
