Full Job Description

Position Title: REGISTERED NURSE

Reports To: Nurse Coordinator

Department: Hematology Clinic

Type: Professional-Exempt

Supervisory Responsibilities: None

Position Purpose:

The Hematology nurse is part of the Hematology team and will be responsible for performing nursing duties and executing clinical care to patients with hematological diagnoses. The nurse will provide care to all patients by:

1. Apply safe and independent judgment.

2. Communicate and collaborate with all team members.

3. Establish and maintain respectful and collaborative relationships with patients and patient families to achieve desired patient outcomes.

4. Establish and maintain respectful and collaborative relationships with health care providers to achieve desired patient outcomes.

5. Establish and maintain respectful and collaborative relationships with peers and supervisors.

6. Monitor and evaluating patient needs.

7. Utilize established clinical pathways.

8. Participate in shared decision-making activities.

9. Utilize available resources to assist with fulfilling patient needs.

10. Maintain patient confidentiality.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree preferred; Registered Nurse. Experience in providing nursing care to hematology patients. Minimum of three years of pediatric nursing experience preferred. Knowledge of medical and scientific terminology. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Excellent written, oral communication skills. Ability to multitask and triage work duties to ensure daily tasks are completed in a timely manner. Must be comfortable working with potentially infectious and hazardous materials. Ability to work and problem solve independently.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: R.N.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Coordinate patient care for patients with bleeding disorders, benign hematologic disorders and thrombosis.

2. Provide education regarding the patient related diagnosis to patient and patient family.

3. Participate in bleeding disorder comprehensive clinic appointments.

4. Insert IV’s and drawing labs.

5. Safely and effectively, administer prescribed intravenous medications.

6. Document the administration of medication accurately.

7. Utilize various strategies to assess patient related complications to determine appropriate action plans.

8. Communicate with providers regarding patient related complications.

9. Assure that patients have appropriate education regarding treatment regimens.

10. Assure that patients have access to prescribed medications.

11. Communicate with Social Work regarding patient social and economic needs.

12. Participate in quality improvement projects.

13. Maintain a positive attitude and work environment.

14. Be willing to seek out new learning opportunities to assure the ability to provide educated information to patients and other health care professionals.

15. Participate in research projects conducted by team providers.

16. Consistently use proper phone etiquette when interacting with patients, patient families and other customers.

Working Conditions:

1. Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds with or without assistance.

2. Able to complete duties under stress, deadlines, and while attending to multiple duties simultaneously.

3. Prolonged computer related exposure, as well as sitting and standing at workstations for long periods of time.

4. Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

5. Bending, sitting, and standing frequently throughout the day.

6. Occasionally travel off-site for meetings, conferences, seminars, and training.

EXEMPT STATUS: This position is exempt from overtime pay provisions of the Federal Fair Labor Standards Act.
