WE ARE HIRING: MANAGER, EHS & COMPLIANCE

Location: Perth Amboy, NJ (On-site)

Reporting to: VP of Manufacturing

Overview

Tropical Cheese is looking for an EHS & Compliance Manager to lead and strengthen our safety function across all areas of the business and multiple sites. This is a high-ownership role — you will drive our safety agenda forward, maintain and improve our audit readiness, and build a safety culture that is visible at every level of the organization.

Based in New Jersey, you will oversee EHS operations at our two NJ facilities while providing regular support to out-of-state sites. You will serve as our primary point of contact for SA8000, SMETA Code of Conduct audits, and other customer-driven compliance programs — ensuring we are always organized, prepared, and ahead of what auditors require.

Key Responsibilities

Lead EHS operations across two NJ facilities and provide regular oversight and support to out-of-state sites, ensuring consistent standards and compliance across all locations.
Own and continuously strengthen our EHS program — policies, procedures, training, and documentation — with a focus on ongoing improvement and operational excellence.
Develop and drive a forward-looking safety agenda and multi-year roadmap with clear milestones and accountability across all sites.
Own and maintain all safety and audit binders, ensuring documentation is always current, organized, and inspection-ready for SA8000, SMETA, OSHA, EPA, and customer audits.
Lead end-to-end preparation and execution for all audits, including SA8000, SMETA Code of Conduct, and other customer-driven compliance programs: gap analyses, mock audits, corrective action plans, and post-audit follow-through.
Support the Director of Quality on SQF audit preparation, owning the EHS-related sections of the SQF binder and serving as subject matter expert during audits.
Lead all safety training programs — design, delivery, and effectiveness — coordinating with HR on scheduling and employee records.
Own new employee safety orientation across all sites, working with HR on onboarding logistics.
Develop and manage emergency response plans, coordinate drills, and ensure preparedness for incidents involving hazardous materials or workplace accidents.
Conduct routine safety inspections and hazard assessments to identify potential risks and corrective actions.
Investigate incidents and near-misses; conduct root cause analysis and drive corrective/preventive actions (CAPA) to closure.
Analyze safety data and implement preventive measures to enhance workplace safety and operational efficiency.
Participate in budget preparation, financial tracking, and monitoring progress toward department financial and budgetary goals.
Ensure ongoing compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local EHS regulations, including requirements specific to each site’s location.
Maintain permits, certifications, and regulatory filings; monitor regulatory changes affecting operations.
Track and report EHS KPIs to senior leadership on a regular cadence.
Other duties as required by the business.

Key Skills & Qualifications

· 5–8 years of EHS experience in food manufacturing, dairy, or a related industry, with experience overseeing multiple facilities.

· Hands-on experience managing SA8000, SMETA Code of Conduct, and SQF audits, including full documentation ownership and coordination with third-party assessors.

· Familiarity with major retail supplier compliance requirements and SMETA Code of Conduct programs.

· Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations, FDA/FSMA requirements, EPA standards, and applicable environmental regulations.

· Experience developing and managing emergency response plans and conducting safety drills.

· A proactive leader who takes ownership, communicates effectively at all levels of the organization, and drives change.

· Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and digital compliance tools.

· OSHA 30 required; CSP, CHMM, or SA8000 Lead Auditor certification a strong plus.

· Familiarity with ISO Management Systems a plus.

· Bilingual Spanish/English is a plus.

Work Environment & Schedule

This is a full-time, on-site position based in Perth Amboy, NJ.
Standard schedule is Monday through Friday.
Up to 20% out-of-state travel may be required.
