Job Title: Contract - Systems Administrator
Location: On-site, Syracuse, NY
Job Type: Contract
Salary Range: $30–$40/hr., depending on experience

About the Role

A growing organization is seeking a Contract Systems Administrator to provide hands-on support across its server, identity, and infrastructure environment. This role will focus on day-to-day systems administration, including support of Windows Server, Active Directory, Microsoft Entra ID, user and access administration, scripting, troubleshooting, documentation, and general infrastructure support.

The ideal candidate will have 3+ years of practical systems administration experience and be comfortable working under the direction of a Senior Systems Administrator. This is not intended to be a design-heavy or engineering-level role. The organization is looking for someone who can execute assigned systems administration tasks, communicate clearly, troubleshoot effectively, and help support a busy IT environment.

This is a strong opportunity for a hands-on Systems Administrator who enjoys operational support, server administration, identity administration, documentation, and working closely with senior technical resources.

Key Responsibilities

Administer and support Windows Server environments.
Support Active Directory administration, including users, groups, permissions, organizational units, and related account management tasks.
Support Microsoft Entra ID administration, including user access, identity-related troubleshooting, and cloud directory support.
Assist with server administration, maintenance, monitoring, patching, upgrades, and troubleshooting.
Support day-to-day infrastructure administration tasks under the direction of the Senior Systems Administrator.
Troubleshoot issues related to user access, authentication, server performance, permissions, systems availability, and general IT infrastructure.
Assist with Group Policy administration and troubleshooting as assigned.
Create, modify, and maintain scripts to support automation, reporting, cleanup, or systems administration tasks.
Support documentation of procedures, configuration changes, troubleshooting steps, and system administration processes.
Assist with backup, recovery, and systems maintenance activities as needed.
Work with IT leadership, infrastructure, help desk, security, and other internal teams to resolve technical issues.
Provide clear status updates, communicate issues professionally, and escalate appropriately.
Assist with endpoint, application, or general IT support tasks as needed based on business priorities.
Help ensure systems administration work remains organized, documented, and supportable after the contract ends.

QualificationsEducation

Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field preferred.
Equivalent hands-on experience in systems administration, server administration, infrastructure support, or related technical support will be considered.

Experience

3+ years of professional systems administration experience preferred.
Experience administering and supporting Windows Server environments.
Hands-on experience with Active Directory administration.
Experience with Microsoft Entra ID or Azure identity administration is preferred.
Experience troubleshooting server, identity, access, permissions, and infrastructure-related issues.
Scripting experience, preferably with PowerShell, is strongly preferred.
VMware or Hyper-V experience is a plus but not required.
Experience with Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, file/print services, patching, backups, or related infrastructure administration is helpful.
Ability to work 100% on-site in Syracuse, NY for the duration of the assignment.

Technical Skills

Working knowledge of Windows Server administration.
Active Directory user, group, permission, and policy administration.
Microsoft Entra ID / Azure AD administration experience or exposure.
PowerShell or related scripting experience.
Understanding of Group Policy concepts and troubleshooting.
Familiarity with virtualization platforms such as VMware or Hyper-V is a plus.
General understanding of networking concepts such as DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP, and connectivity troubleshooting.
Ability to document technical procedures, changes, and troubleshooting resolutions clearly.

Certifications

Microsoft, CompTIA, VMware, or related certifications are preferred but not required.

Soft Skills

Strong troubleshooting, documentation, and communication skills.
Comfortable taking direction from senior technical team members.
Able to follow established procedures and execute assigned tasks accurately.
Organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage priorities in a contract environment.
Practical, hands-on approach to systems administration and problem solving.
Comfortable working with help desk, infrastructure, security, leadership, and end users as needed.
Professional communication skills and the ability to provide clear status updates.
Able to work effectively in an on-site team environment.
