Full Job Description

Job Summary

Supervise daily service shop operations for a team of 15–20 technicians, ensuring trailer repairs, preventative maintenance, and DOT inspections are completed safely, efficiently, and to East Trailers’ quality and compliance standards.

Serve as the floor-level leader who keeps technicians productive, jobs moving on schedule, parts coordinated, and the shop running cleanly — supporting the Service Department Manager in hitting the department’s operational and financial targets.

Duties

Accountable for:

1. Shop floor supervision and workflow management

Accountable for directing daily technician activity and keeping the shop floor running efficiently and on schedule:

Assigning work orders to technicians based on skill level, availability, and job priority.
Monitoring job progress throughout the day and adjusting assignments to prevent bottlenecks and missed deadlines.
Ensuring technicians have the tools, parts, and information needed to complete jobs without unnecessary delays.
Communicating daily workflow status and any scheduling concerns to the Service Department Manager.

2. Technical compliance and quality control

Accountable for ensuring all repairs and inspections meet DOT, FMCSA, OEM, and East Trailers’ standards:

Reviewing completed work for quality and accuracy before jobs are closed out.
Ensuring compliance documentation, inspection records, and PM checklists are completed correctly and on time.
Supporting technicians on complex diagnostics and troubleshooting when needed.
Staying current on regulatory requirements and holding the team accountable to current standards.

3. Team leadership and technician development

Accountable for building a skilled, accountable, and motivated service technician team:

Coaching, training, and evaluating technicians to improve technical skills and job performance.
Onboarding new technicians and ensuring they are trained on safety, procedures, and quality expectations before working independently.
Addressing performance, attendance, and conduct issues promptly and professionally.
Fostering a team culture built on safety, accountability, and doing the job right the first time.

4. Parts coordination, safety, and housekeeping

Accountable for supporting parts availability, maintaining a safe shop environment, and enforcing housekeeping standards:

Coordinating with the parts team to ensure components are staged and available before jobs begin.
Flagging parts shortages or delays early to minimize technician downtime.
Enforcing safety policies, PPE requirements, and housekeeping standards consistently across the shop floor.
Conducting regular shop audits and addressing unsafe conditions or behaviors immediately.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required; technical or trade school training preferred.
3+ years of hands-on experience in heavy-duty trailer repair or fleet service.
1–2 years of supervisory or lead technician experience preferred.
Strong working knowledge of OTR trailers including brakes, suspension, electrical, and structural systems.
Understanding of DOT/FMCSA regulations and shop compliance requirements.
Demonstrated ability to lead a team, manage workload, and hold people accountable in a fast-paced service environment.
